Beauty pageants keep the network runways full in the fall. The Miss America Pageant has eliminated the talent portion of the beauty pageant hoping to increase the viewers. This is not the case with our Angus beauty pageants.

Our juniors competed with their talents in many contests at the National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City in July and the Beef Round Up in August, as well as exhibiting their beautiful Angus animals. One of the junior advisors, Lydia Yon, who was at the shows, wrote:

National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City, MO
Six South Carolina Juniors and seven of their Angus heifers made the trip to the National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City, Missouri, this July. Thanks are due to Ted Bourne, David McMahan, Jesse Adkins, and Ann Blumer for making the long drive with the cattle and supplies. Sally, Drake and Corbin Yon, along with Teddi and Breanne Steadman, joined the cattle in Kansas City.

The juniors were busy with activities most of the week. Ann and her mother, Nancy, attended the State Queen’s luncheon at the beginning of the week. South Carolina’s Junior Quiz Bowl Team made our strongest showing ever by making the Final Round of eight teams from a field of more than 20 teams. The Yon children and Teddi Bourne Steadman made up the Junior Team. Ann also participated on a joint team from NC/SC in her age division.

Drake Yon’s entry in the Photography contest placed third the Junior Angus Cattle Division. In the Graphic Design competition, Sally Yon placed first in the Junior Division for her brochure to promote Certified Angus Beef®. Sally, Drake, and Corbin also participated in the Team Sales competition. All of the heifers made a good showing for South Carolina in some very competitive classes. Part of our group visited the American Angus Association headquarters and we all enjoyed an evening at the American Angus Hall of Fame. It was an extremely busy week full of hard work and fun for the entire group that attended.

Angus enthusiasts even had time to play some golf at the nationals in Kansas City. Cedar Creek Angus Farm of Donalds, SC, sponsored the golf carts for the golfers. The golf tournament raised close to $20,000 for the Angus Foundation.

When the votes were counted for the election of new directors for the National Junior Angus Association, one of the winners was from our neighboring state of North Carolina. Heath McPherson from Snow Camp, NC, is a 19-year-old junior majoring in animal science at Iowa State University, where he has been involved in Ag Council, Block and Bridle, and the Beef Team.

When the Junior Angus members returned to South Carolina, the South Carolina Angus cow beauties competed in August at Clemson. Lydia Yon reports:

SC Junior Beef Round-Up
Sixty head of Angus females, shown by Juniors from South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, were exhibited at the SC Junior Beef Round-Up in Clemson the first weekend in August. Claiming the Grand Champion ribbon was Cory Watt, Iva, SC, with his Senior Yearling, Whitestone G Forever Lady 294. Reserve Champion honors went to Sally Yon, Ridge Spring, SC, for her January heifer, Yon Burgess N332, who was earlier selected as Junior Champion. She was also the Bred and Owned Champion heifer. Georgia juniors, Austin Atkinson and Whitney Sheppard won the Calf and Reserve Calf Division, respectively. In the Summer Division, Ashley Hawkins, Belton, SC, was the division winner, with John Petty from Clover, SC, standing Reserve. The Reserve Junior Champion was shown by Garrett Metz, Iva, SC. Katie Gazda, Athens, GA exhibited the Reserve Senior Champion, which was also selected as the Reserve Champion Bred and Owned heifer.

All the youth participated in the Junior Cattlemen’s Contest, with Angus Juniors participating on many of the winning teams. In the Sales Talk Competition, Sally Yon won the Intermediate Division. Several of our juniors also did well in the Showmanship competition, including Cory Watt and Kylie Metz, who both were awarded belt buckles in their divisions. Samuel Hall won a scholarship to college in the written essay competition.

The SC Junior Association was happy to see five new members from SC showing Angus for the first time, including Ericka Osbourne from Fountain Inn; April and Holly Perry, as well as Tommy McCurry and Joseph Burdette from Iva, SC.

Our junior members are looking forward to a busy fall show season during the months of September and October.

Ashley Hawkins, the reporter for the SC Junior Angus Association, added these notes:

More Round-Up Report Notes
Cattlemen's Contest winners from our association were Sally Yon, Corbin Yon, Drake Yon, Daniel Jerrard, Karen Hawkins, and Ann Blumer. Bred & Owned Angus 1st place winner was Sally Yon. Owned Angus 1st place winner was Cory Watt.

Everyone had a lot of fun and many people commented on the cattlemen’s test being a lot easier this year, but still very challenging! On Saturday the temperature in the barn was taken and was noted 110 degrees!! Despite the heat our members all helped one another to load up their equipment and cattle, resulting in a quick break from the barn to escape the heat! Hope to see everyone at the Upper State Fair in September!

Thanks!
-Ashley Hawkins

After all the beauty contests, elections will follow. The results of the election of new directors for South Carolina will be available as soon as everyone mails in their ballots and they are counted.
Also, delegates for the AAA will be elected from SC to represent our association at the annual meeting of the American Angus Associaton, November 15 in Louisville, KY.

Our Web site www.scangus.org continues to attract more hits. In July our Web page took 516 visits, which is up from 336 in June. This site should be an asset to advertise our sales and let our members know our news faster.

Congratulations. A new baby, Lawrence William, was born to Bill and Elizabeth Bartee on July 22, 2004. He is the baby brother of Wynn Bartee. He weighed 8 lbs. and 13 ounces. He was 22” long.

Our sympathy goes to Ted Bourne and his family at the death of his mother, Charlene Bourne.

Thank you to the following reporters who helped gather and make this article possible: Lydia Yon, Ashley Hawkins, Ray Petty, and Samuel Hall.
