It seems as if most of our lives revolve around Angus and children, either our own or those from SC who are involved with their Angus. We had a wonderful beginning to the summer with the show and field day at Clemson on June 5. The youth and their families went on to perform in Raleigh at the National Junior Angus Eastern Regional Show, hosted by our neighbors in North Carolina on June 17-20. We have a report from Lydia Yon, who serves as one of the SC Junior advisors.
Just a quick report on Eastern Regionals, if you havent heard the results. We had 22 junior exhibitors who exhibited more than 20 head of cattle at Raleigh, NC. Our big winner was Garrett Metz from Iva, SC, who was second overall in Junior Showmanship. He also exhibited two class winners and a division champion in the Owned Heifer show.
Several of our juniors made the finals in showmanship including Elizabeth Hawkins, Ann Blumer, Daniel Jarrard, Katie Pruitt, Sally Yon, and Garrett Metz in their respective age divisions.
Placing in the top five with their owned heifers were Teddi Steadman and Ann Blumer. Placing in the top five with their bred and owned heifers were Ashley Hawkins, Corbin Yon, and Sally Yon.
Our SC Angus royalty was busy at the show. Our state queen, Ann Blumer and our state princess, Savannah Groce attended a brunch at the Eastern Regionals. Savannah also helped out with presenting awards during the show
We were proud to exhibit the third place state group of five head. We had a great time and are looking forward to a great show season this fall. Six of our juniors will travel to Kansas City for the National Junior Show in July.
Thanks Lydia Yon

July 12-17 will bring the juniors an opportunity to show in Kansas City. This will be a great trip to see another part of our U.S. and to meet juniors from other states as well. James Kellett led the Senior Showmanship at the June SC Show. He will be eligible to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Angus Showmanship contest in Kansas City.
Clemson will host another Beef Round-Up July 30- August 1. This is for all breeds and their showman. The juniors can learn a lot from this by participating in the contests. The older youth are eligible for a scholarship for college. The written test is required for the scholarship. Contact your Extension Agent or Clemson for more information.
We are proud of our juniors and their advisors, as well as their families that give so much time and work to make their success possible. The youth will be our messengers to a time and place that we will never reach. Let us hope that the Angus breed will be there with them and their children.

We have a messenger to a place we all hope to reach one day. Our Angus family is grieving over the death of Paul Smith (23) on June 29, 2004. Paul had fought a hard battle to live his entire life.
