SCAA News
September 9, 2004
By Windy Bartee, secretary SCAA

Election ads and news are filling the airways trying to get our votes, but in South Carolina the votes are in!…that is the votes are in for our new directors of the South Carolina Angus Association. It was very close and a recount was required, but the final count elected Mike Johnson, Lewis Smith, and Frankie Mullikin to serve a three year term from 2004 to 2007. Mike and Lewis are returning for second terms. Frankie will be the rookie, having never served on the board before. Welcome aboard!

As our SCAA was electing new directors, the South Carolina members of the American Angus Assciation were balloting to elect delgates for the annual meeting on November 15th in Louisville, Kentucky. The American Angus members from South Carolina elected Kevin Yon of Ridge Springs, Evelyn Edmunds of Clover, and Ted Bartee of Clover to represent them at the annual meeting. The alternates were Gene Pruitt of Abbeville, Ted Bourne of Donalds, and Walter Shealy of Newberry.

Now is the time to make plans to attend the American Angus Association’s 121st Annual Meeting, which is set for Monday, Nov. 15, in Louisville, Ky. The Annual Meeting is conducted in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), which includes a Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus show.

The election of officers and five members to the Association Board of Directors will highlight the Annual Meeting, which is set for 2 p.m. at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC). Elected delegates and other attendees will hear annual reports of the Association and its entities for fiscal year (FY) 2004.

The Annual Banquet will be Monday evening at the Executive West Hotel. Special honorees at the banquet will include inductees into the Angus Heritage Foundation and the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Outstanding Leadership Award winner.

The Angus show schedule will be the same this year as it was last year. The junior show will be Sunday, Nov. 14; the ROV bulls and cow-calf pairs will show Monday, Nov. 15; and ROV females will show Tuesday, Nov. 16. For more information contact American Angus Association at (816)383-5100 or go to www.angus.org.

Two of our Angus producers have scheduled sales at their farms this fall. Walter Shealy has selected Sunday, October 31st for his sale date. You have probably heard that black cows are lucky if they cross your path and that is what Walter plans for them to do at his Black Grove Farm Mature Cow Dispersal, 2:00 p.m. at 20977 US Hwy. 76 in Newberry, SC. Call Walter Shealy at (803) 924-1000 or (803) 276-9385, for more information

After Halloween on Saturday, November 6 the Yon Family Farm is having their Yon Fall Sale with Angus and Charolais animals. They will have more than 50 coming two-year old bulls and 50 head of females at the Yon Family Farm on Hwy. 392, Ridge Spring, SC. Call Kevin Yon at (803) 685-5048 or kyon@pbtcomm.net for more information.

The officers and directors of the SCAA will be gathering soon to plan their Carolina Futurity for March 18th and 19th. Stay tuned for further news about that.

As you are busy with your cattle and activities this fall, make time to vote. We can only keep this wonderful democracy of the United States of America, if we educate ourselves and our youth about our freedom. To maintain this freedom for our families, we must put out the effort to understand the issues and vote for the candidates we think are best. Better yet become a candidate and do what you think is best. God bless America.
