SC Angus News
April 9, 2005
by Windy Bartee, sec.
May brings thoughts of summer and flowers and, in our world of Angus, cow shows. Our South Carolina Angus Juniors will meet the first weekend in June to show their cattle and prepare for the summer show schedule. Ann Blumer, the South Carolina Junior Angus Association (SCJAA) president, is helping plan the show with Ted Bartees advice. The show will be June 4th at the Clemson Cattle Complex next to the T. Ed Garrison Arena. Melvin Porter from Georgia has agreed to be the judge.
The South Carolina Junior Angus Association (SCJAA) met without flowers in March where they had their 34th Carolina Futurity and Annual Meeting on March 18th. Without flowers because the tables at the banquet were beautifully decorated by Evelyn Edmunds with wooden Angus heifers standing on a stand wrapped in colorful western bandanas. The food was delicious with beef, of course, and chicken pie. Over 100 people attended. The new officers that were nominated were: President-Walter Shealy, Vice President-David McMahan, Secretary- Windy Bartee, Treasurer-Jean Johnson. Directors nominated were Ted Bourne, Danny Winchester, and William Rushton.
The Patrick Family attended the banquet to honor their parents, Floyd Patrick and Elsie Patrick. The 34th Carolina Futurity was dedicated to them this year because of their contribution and work with the Angus Association. Unfortunately Floyd Patrick had some cancer surgery that kept him at home. The good news is that Elsie and all three Patrick sons were there with their families to accept the award in his place. Stephanie Clark, representing the members of the SCJAA presented them with an Angus bull statue as a symbol of their appreciation.
New members of the SCJAA who were in attendance were welcomed and introduced by President Gene Pruitt. As our breed is growing in numbers so is our SC Angus Association membership.
Walter Shealy, the vice president and president-elect for the SCAA, presented Gene Pruitt with a plaque for his service as SCJAA president for 2003-2005. This is his second time as president. Gene had served as president for an earlier term in 1995.
The SCJAA this year will publish a new directory. Whole page ads will cost $150. A half page ad is $100. Many of those present at the annual banquet selected the page for their ad by bidding on the special locations. Any who were not present can still get your ad in.
Sponsors for the SC Junior Angus Show on June 4th are: Cedar Creek, Black Grove, Tumble T Bar T, Glendale Angus, Bob Rice and Rice Farms, Black Crest, Bar W, Hawkins Angus Farm, Cox Angus, ABS, Kellett Angus, Hurricane Creek Angus, Mi-Li Angus and Mull Meadows. Others volunteered as sponsors for the Beef Round-Up on July 30-31st. They are: Cedar Creek, Black Grove, Tumble T Bar T, Glendale Angus, Double D Angus, Triple R Angus, Yon Family Farm, Paul Boyd Angus, Bush N Vine, Tokeena, ABS, Willa-Dale Angus, Gazda Cattle Company, Holly Berry Farm, and River Hill Farm.
Ann Blumer, as president of the SCJAA, reported on some of the junior achievements in 2004. To name just a few of their top achievements at the SC State Show: those with Grand Champions were Sally Yon, Cory Watt, and John Petty. Those who won Reserve were Drake Yon and Garrett Metz. At the Beef Round-Up, Cory Watt and Kylie Metz won Grand Champion Showmanship. Sally Yon won Grand Champion Bred and Owned Female. Cory Watt won Grand Champion Owned Female. Sally Yon won the Intermediate class in sales. Samuel Hall won a scholarship.
Our juniors made a great appearance at the National Junior Angus Show in Kansas City. Teddi Steadman, Sally, Drake, and Corbin Yon were in the finals of the Quiz Bowl. Sally Yon got first in graphic design. Drake Yon won third place in the photo contest. In the very large national classes they all placed in the top end in most cases. The National Junior Angus Show this year is in Denver, Colorado, on July 17-24. Now that will be a looooooong trip.
Also, Ann Blumer gave some gifts from the Juniors. She presented Ted and Windy Bartee with a beautiful crystal bowl in appreciation for their help with the junior show each year. She also gave each of the sponsors a briefcase from the juniors. Stephanie Clark received a crystal candy jar to express the Juniors thanks for her leadership in the Silent Auction.
The American Angus Hall of Fame handled the Carolina Futurity sale. Jeremy Haag from the Hall was very complimentary of the cattle in the sale. David Gazda, the regional manager for the American Angus Association said, It is the best consignment sale that SC has ever had. The prices that the cattle brought certainly backed up these claims. Forty-three lots sold for a gross of $109,750. Each lot averaged $2552. The evidence is real when you compare this average to 2004, when the average was only $2022. Good Angus cattle are in demand.
Before the sale the SC Juniors had a silent auction for items that people had donated. They made about $3000 for their activities. Thank you to all the donors and Stephanie Clark for organizing it.
SC Angus Association has a Web site at www.scangus.org. We can sell banner ads there for $50/ month plus the design costs to our members. We will also have ads available in the new directory. The directory is only published every 2-3 years. Also if you are having a sale and you are a member of the SC Angus Association, we will include your flier in the next newsletter for a $100 fee.
As the flowers grow and bloom in May, we also enjoy the flowering of our youth as we watch them grow in stature as well as leadership and skills. The future of our world and the Angus breed rests with them. Let us help them as often as we are able so that they can successfully lead us into the future. Maybe they will come back and help us on the farm someday too.
