Every fall brings round-up time to the cattle producers. We are in the process of rounding up our $20.00 dues and ads for our new SC Angus Directory. If you have not yet gotten yours in, hurry. Call Windy Bartee at 803-222-7533 or tumblet@earthlink.net.
Our South Carolina round up began in July with the Beef Round-Up at Clemson. Thirty-one juniors were there in full force with their 53 Angus. Several SC Juniors placed well in the Junior Cattlemens contest on Saturday. Ann Blumer won a $500 scholarship. Chris McGill won a $500 savings bond. Sally Yon was the reserve winner in the Intermediate Sales Talk Competition. Many others did quite well.
When they entered the ring on Sunday, our SC youth ran into stiff competition from the Georgia Juniors. From South Carolina John Petty won the Reserve Intermediate Champion. Sally Yon won the Junior Champion. Garrett Jones won the Reserve Junior Champion. Drake Yon won the Reserve Senior Champion. Sally Yon pulled to the front with her heifer, winning two Grand Champions, both the Owned and Bred and Owned. The Gazda family from Georgia took the Reserve Grand Champions. Taylor Gazda won the Owned Reserve Grand Champion. Sister Katie Gazda won the Bred and Owned Reserve Grand Champion. Josh Cabe had the Reserve Calf Champion. Not to be forgotten, North Carolina was represented in the winners circle by Jennifer White whose heifer was the Intermediate Champion.
In the showmanship arena all the junior breed owners were rounded up to compete against each other. From Starr, SC Garrett Metz won the Reserve Junior Champion. The Georgia Angus Juniors won the following in showmanship: Taylor Gazda was the Champion Junior. Josh Cabe was the Champion Senior. Brother Will Cabe was Reserve Senior Champion.
Helping to corral the kids and cattle were Dr. Larry Olson, Steve McPhail, Bobbie and Frankie Mullikin. Kevin and Lydia Yon were ramrods of the Angus herd of competitors. We all owe our thanks to these behind-the-scene volunteers that make possible these opportunities for our Angus youth.
Meanwhile in Louisville, Kentucky Teddi Steadman was rounding up a trophy for showmanship at the American Angus Breeders Futurity. She received the Reserve Champion Showmanship in the Division Two of the junior competition. Teddi Steadman of Greenwood, SC also won junior heifer calf Champion at the 2005 American Angus Breeders' Futurity with her heifer, Wellington Beauty 11W5.
We are proud of our all our Angus winners.
Cattle producers from around the state were rounded up at Rusty and Jesse Thomsons farm near Bullocks Creek in York and Chester counties for an Up State Beef Cattle Wildlife Field Day on August 6. Leaders of our Angus breeders helped to put on the show. Kevin Yon and Bob Rice led the session on artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transplant (ET) which are techniques Angus breeders and other cattlemen are utilizing to improve genetics. Many Angus breeders were seen in the crowd enjoying the field day and learning from the sessions.
We are rounding up more and more Angus according to the registrations and transfers being sent in. As our Angus breed grows in number so do our Angus producers. The American Angus Association reports that higher premiums are being paid for our quality branded beef using the better Angus genetic traits. This premium could result in as much as an additional $60 per animal. No wonder producers are turning to Angus. For more information, visit www.angus.org.
Some of our SC Juniors adventured from our local corral out to Boise, Idaho for the American Angus LEAD conference. Sally Yon, Ann Blumer and our Georgia neighbor Katie Gazda spared the time from their busy summer to learn about leadership in the Angus business. Also Ann Blumer was the only SC Junior to go to the National Junior Angus Show in Denver, Colorado in July. She is one junior who is seeing America through Angus eyes.
Now that the summer round up is over all the kids have been corralled back into school. But another round up will begin with the fall fairs. Keep tuned for more success with the South Carolina Angus.
A special thanks for contributions from Lydia Yon, Ashley Petty, the American Angus Association and David Gazda that made the above article possible.
Reminder: we have a web site at www.scangus.org that gives our membership and other SC Angus news.
