Children of all ages gathered at Clemson for the South Carolina (SC) Junior Angus Show on Saturday, June 4th. It wasn’t the circus but it was a big show. There was a rodeo both in the T. Ed Garrison Arena and at the cattle barn next door where the SC Juniors were showing their heifers. The adult members of the South Carolina Angus Association came to watch the youngest Angus lovers display their animals and to assist them in any way.

As in any circus there was plenty of showmanship. The showmanship classes began the show from the youngest to the oldest. Judge Melvin Porter from Jefferson, Georgia, took extra time to help the youngest juniors with their showmanship. The Beginner and the Intermediate classes were the largest and the competition was stiff.

Breann Steadman won the Novice Showmanship for the 5-8 year olds. Garrett Metz took the ribbon for the Beginner Showmanship class for the 9-12 year olds. The Intermediate Showmanship Class for 13-16 year olds found Sally Yon at the top. The Senior Showmanship Class was smaller but the skill and experience of all the older juniors competing was evident. Ann Blumer placed first with James Kellett in second. Both are eligible to compete representing South Carolina in the National Junior Angus Show Showmanship Contest in Denver, Colorado, in July.

Like lumbering elephants into the ring entered the bulls! John Petty won the Champion Bull trophy with his bull JP Stevenson Royce 104.

The Cow/Calf Champion was owned by Savannah Groce. Ashley Hawkins helped her show the pair, Savannah Fi and her calf Savannah’s Fiesta. Ann Blumer owned the Reserve Champion Cow/Calf Pair. Sally Yon helped her show HC Ectessa Abbey and her calf HC Ectessa’s Rose.

Ashley Hawkins’ Grace took top honors in the Junior Heifer class. Ashley's sister Karen won second with Cookie. In the Late Senior Heifer class John Wesley Edmunds was the winner with his Edmunds B Elba 404A. Chisholm Clark led the Early Senior Heifer Calves with Partisover Blackcap 545. Then Chisholm’s heifer won Calf Champion. John Edmunds stood Reserve Calf Champion.

John Petty won the Late Summer Yearling class with Petty’s Royce Pride. Katie Pruitt followed in the next class of Early Summer Yearlings with Black Grove Pride 554, who won first and then the Intermediate Champion. John Petty won the Reserve Intermediate Champion.

Late Junior Yearlings had Cory Watt at the front with his Whitestone CWF Rita P101 heifer. Sally Yon led the winner for the Early Junior Yearlings with her Yon Witch P309. She became the Junior Champion. Garrett Metz, who was second to her in the class won the Reserve Junior Champion with PF Princess of Elga 878.

Ann Blumer trotted her SS Miss Flora into first in the Late Senior Yearlings. Katie Pruitt won again in the Early Senior Yearlings with Lemmon Blackbird 157N and also won Senior Champion. Drake Yon stood second for the class and got the Reserve Senior Champion with Yon Burgess P76.

Sally Yon won the Bred and Owned Champion. Drake Yon stood just below her as Reserve Champion Bred and Owned. This is one class that is required by the American Angus Association to qualify for their help with premiums. To be bred and owned the qualification is that the junior must have owned the dam of the calf shown by the junior at the time of the cow’s breeding.

The Grand Champion ribbon and trophy went to Sally Yon with her Witch from the Early Junior Yearling class. Katie Pruitt came in as a proud Reserve Grand Champion with Lemmon Blackbird 157N.

The South Carolina Juniors appreciate all those who helped sponsor the show. The classes were sponsored by ABS Global, DeForest, WI; Cedar Creek Farms, Donalds, SC; Hawkins Angus, Pelzer, SC; Bar W Farm, Woodruff, SC; Black Crest Farms, Sumter, SC; Rice Farms, Fountain Inn, SC; Cox Angus, Pelzer, SC; Mull Meadow Farms, Pendleton, SC; Glendale Angus, Abbeville, SC; Kellet Angus, Simpsonville, SC; and Tumble T Bar T, Clover, SC.

The grand finale at the circus comes at the end of the show. All the entertainers parade out and around the circus ring. The South Carolina Juniors gathered for their finale by meeting on the bleachers to elect officers. The new officers of the SCJAA are president, Ann Blumer; vice president, Sally Yon; secretary-treasurer, Daniel Jarrard; reporter, Ashley Hawkins; queen, Ann Blumer; princess, Mary Hall.

The directors are Chris McGill, Patrick McGill, Drake Yon, Corbin Yon, Corey Watt, John Petty, Samuel Hall, Katie Pruitt, Kayla Kellett, Savannah Groce, Teddi Steadman, Breann Steadman, Elizabeth Hawkins, Chisholm Clark, James Kellett, and Austin Groce. The juniors re-elected their advisors, Lydia Yon, Jesse Adkins, and Ted Bourne, who, you could say, were the circus producers.

Some of the circus roustabouts who were seen helping the show go on by rounding up the cattle and kids were Ted Bourne, Bobby Mullikin, Lewis Smith, and Edmund Hall. The ringmaster was Roy Herron who did all the announcing of the winners. Two spotters, Ted Bartee and Dr. Dale Handlin helped Roy. Those who served on the side being sure all who won were delivered the proper premiums, ribbons and trophies were Nancy Blumer and Glenda Pruitt. They could compare to the beautiful circus ladies who stand below and help the high wire acts by holding the lines.

Back in the animal tent were the animal caretakers, the many grandparents and parents, scurrying around getting the animals ready for the big show. Among them was Floyd Patrick, looking well after having cancer surgery in the spring.

The big show will go on again at the Beef Round-Up at Clemson on July 30-31. This is a huge event with all breeds of cattle shown. Our SC Angus and children will compete against 4-H members from all the neighboring states as well as SC. As the ringmaster would say, “Children of all ages, welcome to the greatest show on earth”… if you love Angus cattle and children.
