February is a month in which Presidents Day is celebrated by the United States. One of our presidents, President Teddy Roosevelt was noted for his expression, “Bully.” In South Carolina, February is definitely “bully” with a bull sale every Saturday. These Angus bulls showed up and brought the following “bully” results:

February 25 -

In the “bully” sales there were no top guns but there were top bulls that brought top prices. At the Clemson bull sale, Dr. Larry Olson said, “The high-selling bull at $5000 was from Deer Creek Angus owned by Greg Mason of Chesney. He was high IMF, high ultrasound, and high EPD in the sale, plus (being) from one of the top-performing bulls, Bon View New Design 1407. Stephanie Clark’s lot 21 was the top-gaining bull by GAR Expectation 4915. He brought $4200.”
At Black Crest the top bull was lot 87-BCF 230L Alliance P245 by BCF 6595 Alliance 201M for $4,100. Top bull at the Yon Family Farm went to Lot 29-YON Future Direction R212 by C A Future Direction 5321, who topped the sale at $7000. Tokeena’s sale had the top bull as Tokeenas 5B4 of 3A4 9126 by War Alliance 9126 6006 for $3,300.
By the way, the McPhail clan had a significant birth in January. Beth McPhail Dudley and her husband, Lanier, had a baby boy, Will, on January 10, 2006. They are living in Danielsville, GA. Walter McPhail also gave news about his son Luke, who is training with the United States Air Force.
If February was the month for Angus “bullies,” then March was the month for Angus “girlies.” The 35th Carolina Angus Futurity took place at the Clemson, T. Ed Garrison Cattle Complex on March 18th. Some of the best bred Angus females in South Carolina were offered at auction. Jeremy Haag from the American Angus Hall of Fame in Smithville, Missouri, was the sales manager. Mike Jones was the auctioneer and Ted Bourne was the sale chairman.
On Friday night before the sale, the SC Angus Association officers and directors met for the annual meeting and banquet. Paul and Linda Wilkie had the Futurity dedicated to them for their years of work with the SC Angus Association and with the SC Junior Angus. They were awarded an Angus bull trophy. Their picture and dedication were on the inside cover of the 35th Carolina Angus Futurity catalog. The Wilkie family was present to help honor Paul and Linda. Paul, Junior attended with his wife, Bethany. Elizabeth and Tom Robertson brought their two-year-old son, Cal. Bill Bartee of the Charlotte WBT’s radio show “Carolina Outdoors” introduced the Wilkies.
President Walter Shealy presented the new SCAA officers and directors. Mike Johnson will take over as treasurer replacing his wife, Jean Johnson, who has graciously served for almost 20 years. The three new directors elected were Stephanie Clark, Charlie Cox, and Kevin Yon. The other officers and directors remain unchanged, “bully for them.”
The month of May follows soon after April and its showers, we hope. The SC Angus Association plans to have a Field Day in Fountain Inn, SC, at the Riverhill Farm owned by Dr. Rodger and Stephanie Clark. It will begin at 11 am with lunch being served about noon. Stephanie has some interesting speakers and demonstrations planned. So mark the date on your calendar for Saturday, May13th. It will be a “bully good time.”
