South Carolina Junior Angus Put on a Show!
Well, the infamous and threatening date of 6/6/6 is over as I write this. So far nothing too catastrophic has occurred. However one thing that happened on June 3, 2006, i.e. 6/3/06, was a rollicking start to the Angus show season but not a catastrophe. The cattle were feeling their oats as they entered the ring for the first time this season, and for some, the first time in their life. The older cows that were shown last year were a bit calmer than the green horns were. (Can you say green horns about Angus that have no horns?)
The no horn Angus, the juniors and the old hands all gathered at the Clemson Cattle Complex for the 2006 SC Junior Angus Show on June 3rd. Dr. David Kirkpatrick drove from UT-Knoxville to judge the black beauties.
Showmanship kicked off the fun. It was not fun if your calf pulled away and ran from you. In the Beginner Class, Breann Steadman (9 years old) stood first. The Junior Class (born 1995-1993) had Corbin Yon winning the blue ribbon. Savannah Nicole Groce led her Intermediate Class of 13-16 year olds in showmanship. Ann Blumer won first and Samuel Hall came in second for the Senior Class division of 17-21 year olds showmen.
“The Yons have it” in the Bred-and-Owned Class. Sally Yon won first, Drake Yon was second, and Corbin Yon was third.
Sally Yon won Grand Champion and Senior Champion with her Senior Yearling, Yon Hazel R61 sired by Sitz Alliance 6595. Drake Yon took the Reserve Grand Champion ribbon and Calf Champion with Yon Hazel S142 sired by SAV 8180 Traveler 004. Corbin Yon won Reserve Calf Champion with his Yon Hazel S99 sired by Hyline Right Time 338.
Katie Pruitt took the Reserve Senior Champion with BCF Ideal P316 sired by SA Neutron 377. Chisholm Clark won Junior Champion with SVF Forever Lady P215 sired by WCC Special Design L309 and winner of the Early Junior Yearlings. John Petty won Reserve Junior Champion and the Late Junior Yearling with CSP Burgess R183 sired by GAR Expectation 6951.
John Petty also won the Intermediate Champion and Early Summer Yearling with Edmunds EXT Maid 657E sired by JP Earl Marshall Legend 103. The Reserve Intermediate Champion and Late Summer Yearling was won by John Wesley Edmunds III with HEE Maid 45T sired by JP Earl Marshall Legend 103.
Yon Hazel S99 sired by Hyline Right Time 338 was second in her Early Senior Heifer Class and won Reserve Calf Champion as she was shown by Corbin Yon behind his brother Drake. Destiny McCauley won her Late Senior Calf Class. Ann Blumer was at the top in her class of Junior Heifers.
The Cow-Calf Champion was Kemmer Blackbird with her calf Bush of Rice farms owned and led by Savannah Groce. Her brother Austin led the cow. Teddi Steadman owned the Reserve Cow-Calf Champion, Shermans Forever Lady 222 with her calf Cedar Creek Rito 2540.
In the bull division John Wesley Edmunds won the class and Bull Champion with Edmunds New Power 2335 sired by Edmunds New Promise. The Reserve Bull Champion, Bush of Rice Farms sired by Bushs Full Tilt 921, was owned by Savannah Groce.
The South Carolina Juniors appreciate the sponsors that helped them with this show. They were as follows: Double B Farms, Cox Angus, Beechwood Angus, American Angus Hall of Fame, Cedar Creek Farm, Glendale Angus, Rice Farms, Bar W Ranch, Mull Meadow, Hawkins Angus, Tumble T Bar T Farm, Black Grove Farm, Stillwater Cattle Company, Spanish Oaks, and Black Crest Farm. There were many members of the SC Angus Association there to help and watch. All of this helps to make SC Angus a cohesive unit and a team. Thanks to all these with the team spirit who helped.
After the Angus beauty pageant finished, the juniors had a leadership contest. The SC Junior Angus elected the following officers: president- Ann Blumer, vice president- Sally Yon, secretary-treasurer- Savannah Groce, reporter- Ashley Hawkins, queen- Savannah Groce, princess-Ashley Hawkins. Delegates to the National Junior Angus Show will be John Petty and Ann Blumer. All of the juniors who were not officers but were present were elected as directors. The advisors returning again are Ted Bourne, Jesse Adkins, and Lydia Yon.
The SC Juniors will be traveling to Harrisonburg, VA, and Indianapolis, IN, for the Eastern Regional, June 23-25, and National Junior Angus, July 9-15, shows. SCJAA will be represented by two groups in the CAB® Cook-Off Contest. Alleen Hawkins is helping them with their skit and recipes.
The Beef Round-Up will be at Clemson on July 28-29. Contact Larry Olson if you need to enter at 803-284-3343, ext. 231.
Some of our SC Juniors will atted the LEAD conference in Oklahoma City. LEAD stands for Leaders Engaged in Angus Development. “Wranglin Up Your Future” is the theme for the 2006 LEAD Conference to be held August 3-6, 2006. We hope our juniors have a safe trip to Oklahoma City, OK.
Then everyone will be back to school as the SC schools begin in August. The rollicking start to the summer will be a rollicking finish and then… the fairs begin.
