Jan. 27, 2006
Birthdays are a big item in our lives. We know how important the birthday date is in registering a calf and how it determines “Who’s your Daddy.”
Birthdays are important to us in the South Carolina Angus Association. March marks the 35th birthday of the Carolina Angus Futurity. We will be celebrating on Friday, March 17 at the Ramada Inn in Clemson. The social hour begins at 6. The banquet and SCAA annual meeting begin at 7 pm. The cost of the dinner is $20. The Ramada Inn is a change. (We were outgrowing our space at the Clemson Conference Center and had not grown enough to meet their increased charge.) Please let Windy Bartee know if you plan to be at the banquet so that we will have enough food and space. 803-222-7533 or tumblet8@bellsouth.net
The SC Juniors will meet after the banquet. Danny Winchester is planning a semen auction at the banquet. Carolina Futurity Sale begins at 12 on Saturday, March 18. Stephanie Clark will help the juniors with another silent auction, if the juniors and their parents call her at 864-243-2214 to offer their help.
Rooms have been held at Ramada Inn (864-654-7501) at $68 and the James Martin Inn at the Clemson Conference Center (888-654-9020) at $89. Call early before the rooms are released.
Each year the Futurity has improved the sale from the previous year. The cattle have definitely exhibited better genetics as the years have passed and the EPDs have taken on a bigger role in cattle selection. Jeremy Haag from the American Angus Hall of Fame in Smithville, Missouri, visited South Carolina to help select the quality cattle that go in the sale.
Ted Bourne, the vice president of SCAA and sale chairman, went with Jeremy on the farm tour. Ted said, “We completed the tour. We visited 28 farms and presently have 83 lots consigned from the 28.”
The semen list for the auction will be in the sale book. Danny Winchester has chaired this event and has obtained the following semen:

History Notes on the SC Carolina Angus Futurity and the Dedications
The SC Carolina Angus Futurity began 35 years ago. Roy Herron, a former president and secretary, gives credit to its beginnings, “Ernie Craig got it started.” He added, “It went to almost nothing until we went to un-haltered cattle. We got to the low thirties because no one wanted to halter break them.”
Originally the Angus Futurity event was both a show of halter-broken cattle and then a sale of those cattle. This allowed many juniors to select a halter-broken animal to begin showing. Many took advantage of this opportunity to begin their Angus show experience.
In 1986 the South Carolina Angus Association decided to begin honoring someone who had contributed to the success of the organization and the Angus breed. Dr. Walter Bishop was president and Ted Bartee was the chairman of the Carolina Angus Futurity. That year the officers and directors of the SCAA chose to honor Mrs. Evelyn Edmunds. She had served the SCAA 17 years as its secretary. She had also been instrumental in forming the SC Junior Angus Association in 1968 and has influenced and encouraged many juniors through the years to show Angus cows. At the banquet preceding the sale, she was presented a specially designed Gist belt buckle. Each year since then, except for one, another person or couple has been honored. The next year Zack Livingston was honored. Zack had served as SCAA treasurer for over 20 years.
Research has produced the following list of those who have been selected for the honor of having the Carolina Angus Futurity dedicated to them:
1986- Evelyn Edmunds
1987- Zack Livingston
1988- L.L. Copeland
1989- Leonard and Rose Rhyne
1990- none
1991- Bill Coker
1992- In memory of Joe Bowen
1993- Hugh and Joyce Rankin
1994- B. B. Hutchison
1995- Dale and Willa Handlin
1996- Ted and Windy Bartee
1997- Paul and Evelyn Boyd
1998- Doris Blackmon and Shirley Brown
1999- Billy and Lee McLeod
2000- Troy and Wyatt Wimberly
2001- Ted and Judy Bourne
2002- Bob and Frances Rice
2003- Roy and Elizabeth Herron
2004- Mike and Jean Johnson
2005- Floyd and Elsie Patrick
At the SCAA annual banquet and meeting this year on March 17, the honorees will be Paul and Linda Wilkie. The Wilkies served as SC Junior advisors for years while their children, Paul, Jr. and Elizabeth showed. They later sponsored and mentored a young neighbor boy who wanted to show Angus. Paul has worked in the offices of president, vice president, and director of the SCAA for multiple years. In this capacity, he chaired the SC Carolina Angus Futurity sale more than once. He has also served as president of the Laurens County Cattlemen’s Association. The SCAA members and officers are proud to invite you to celebrate the 35th birthday of the Carolina Angus Futurity and its dedication to Paul and Linda Wilkie.
Happy Birthday cards and wishes will be accepted but are not necessary. If you would like to make a birthday donation, the SC Junior Angus Association will welcome your support as a class sponsor or by your participating in the bidding on the silent auction and the semen sale at the banquet.
Thank you to Evelyn Edmunds, Doris Blackmon, and Roy Herron for their help with the research of the SCAA Carolina Angus Futurity history.
