South Carolina Angus Association News
November 3, 2006
Windy Bartee

The frost is on the pumpkins and the nights are crisp with cold. The leaves are at their best and so are our Angus as they parade around the show ring. The Angus part of the South Carolina State Fair took place in Columbia on October 20-21, 2006.

Showmanship came at the end of that busy day. Drake Yon won the junior showmanship. Sally Yon won the senior showmanship. Another winner at the fair was a SC Junior Angus member. Benjamin Jackson won a 2006 South Carolina State Fair Academic Scholarship selected from hundreds of applicants. Fifty scholarship recipients were selected from SC based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, citizenship, and need. Each recipient will receive a $2,000 academic scholarship for the 2006-2007 school year.

Showmanship comes into mind with the new additions department. Steve and Jessica McPhail are proud to show off their first child with the birth of their daughter and Angus enthusiast, Samantha Anne McPhail, on Oct 27th at 11:39 AM. She weighed 7lbs. 5oz. and was 19 1/2 in. long. Mom and baby are fine. (Does this mean Daddy is stressed out?)

Halloween brought out more showing of the McPhail clan with the Georgia branch. Beth McPhail Dudley proudly displayed her son, Will Dudley, alias “Charlie Brown.” (See photo.)

Getting ready for another sale the officers and directors of the South Carolina Angus Association met on Sunday, November 5, at 4 PM at Logan’s Roadhouse in Greenville. They were working on the details for the March 16-17, 2007, Carolina Angus Futurity. Danny Winchester could not be present because he had just had back surgery. Kevin Yon was busy delivering cattle after his sale. The SCAA officers and directors will next meet after the bull sale at Clemson on February 3, 2007.

Each November the American Angus Association holds the annual meeting in Louisville, KY, in conjunction with the Angus part of the NAILE. The delegates elected to represent SC will convene on November 13th with delegates from all over the US to elect new officers and directors for the American Angus Association. This year the delegates for SC are Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring; Walter Shealy III, Newberry and Ted R. Bartee, Clover. The alternates are Evelyn G. Edmunds, Clover; Ted S. Bourne, Donalds; and Michael Scharberg, Lynchburg.

The leaves may be past their peak color as our representatives drive back through the mountains from Louisville hoping for some late “leaf peeking.” Some of the mountain peaks may actually show a dusting of snow instead. As skiers begin to dream of their winter wonderland weekends on the slopes, the Angus may be “herd” on high as they graze along the hilltops. Your shopping days are numbered. Merry Christmas!
