South Carolina Angus Association
October 3, 2006
Windy Bartee, Secretary

Election time is here again. Everyone is voting. We hope … to keep America and the Angus Associations strong and well represented.

First the SC Angus Association members have a chance to nominate officers, directors and honorees for the SC Angus Hall of Fame and the March Carolina Futurity. The forms should be in the mail by now. The officers and directors will meet November 5th to plan their March Futurity and discuss the nominations. They will meet and eat at Logan’s Roadhouse, 53 Beacon Drive, Greenville, SC, 864-213-9444.

Then all registered Americans will have the opportunity to vote for their leaders on Tuesday, November 7th. Remember you can’t complain if you don’t vote.

The third vote will take place in Louisville, KY on November 13th. The members of the SC Angus Association have elected delegates going to the annual meeting to vote for new officers and directors for the American Angus Association. This takes place in conjunction with the NAILE. Those chosen from South Carolina are:

Delegates
Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring
Walter Shealy III, Newberry
Ted R. Bartee, Clover

Alternates
Evelyn G. Edmunds, Clover
Ted S. Bourne, Donalds
Michael Scharberg, Lynchburg

We will know the results by November 13th at the Monday evening banquet when the new officers will be introduced to all the members attending.

Meanwhile the fairs have been going on this fall. A few of the results of the judge’s votes have been turned in from the York County Fall Livestock Show. Hannah Whitesides won the Grand Champion Angus heifer. She is from York, SC, and is a first-time exhibitor. She won with a senior yearling heifer from Samuel Hall.

John Petty won the Reserve Grand Champion with his early summer yearling.

I
n the showmanship for all breeds for the 5-10 year-olds, Chisholm Clark won. John Petty won the showmanship award for the 15-19 year division. The showmanship prize included a $250 scholarship.

Other Angus exhibitors were Elizabeth Edmunds, John Wesley Edmunds, Mary Hall, and Lauren McGill.

Back on the farm on November 4, Yon Family Farms is selling 70 coming 2-year-old Angus bulls and females on the Yon Family Farm, Ridge Springs, SC. If you need information contact Kevin Yon at (803) 685-5048 or kyon@pbtcomm.net, and www.yonfamilyfarm.com.

The Angus breed wins the vote once again, according to the American Angus Association statistics.

Angus Breed Records
Nearly 350,000 Animals in Fiscal 2006

The American Angus AssociationSM experienced significant growth in all levels of business in fiscal 2006, which ended September 30. The Association recorded 347,572 registrations, posting a continual increase over the past two decades.

“Angus breeders have enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years and especially the past two years,” says John Crouch, executive vice president of the American Angus Association. “The versatility of the Angus breed and its ability to excel in maternal traits and end-product quality has made Angus the breed of choice for commercial cattlemen throughout the United States.”

Registrations rose more than 7 percent from the previous year, with 347,572 registrations processed. Transfers, which represent the sales of cattle to new owners, also increased with a total of 206,121, also up 7 percent from a year ago. Of the registrations processed, more than 10 percent were embryo transfer calves and nearly 49 percent of all animals registered were A.I. sired.

The number of regular members grew more than 4 percent, with 3,558 adults joining. New junior memberships remained steady at 1,342.

Reports of Angus cattle sales showed growth as well. Fourteen percent more bulls were reported selling through auction sales attended by Association regional managers, and they averaged more than $135 per head over a year ago. Female sales increased as well, and averaged $243 more per lot than fiscal 2005.

Angus breeders continue to use Beef Improvement Records (BIR) to keep performance records in order to focus on genetic improvement. A 6 percent increase in participation was posted with nearly 9,700 herds submitting more than 882,000 birth, weaning and yearling weights. Additionally more than 150,000 ultrasound measurements were submitted, marking an 18.5 percent increase in that technology.

AngusSource®, which earned status as a USDA Process Verified Program (PVP) during the past year, also experienced growth this year posting a 4 percent increase in enrollments. Producers are also realizing the value of information when selling their calves as the use of marketing profiles has jumped nearly 36 percent compared to a year ago.

A record high 13.1 million cattle were identified for the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Program, which sold more than 543 million pounds of CAB brand products this year, the highest figure since 2003.

The American Angus Association is the world’s largest beef breed organization, with headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. The not-for-profit company and its subsidiaries, Certified Angus Beef LLC, and Angus Productions Inc., and its affiliate, the Angus Foundation, provide programs and services for its members and their customers, while promoting the Angus breed and supporting education, youth and research. For more information about the Association, go to www.angus.org.

It seems that the American Angus Association is really doing a great job of keeping track of all our Angus. Better than that, the Angus are taking over the cattle market with numbers as well as prices. Keep voting for Angus.
