South Carolina Angus News
September 9, 2006
Windy Bartee

Fall, football and fairs follow the sunny sultry summer.

Looking back at the sunny sultry summer we recall the field day at Sharon Furr’s Spanish Oaks Farm in Blackstock, SC, in the middle of a hot July 22nd day. At the end of July our juniors competed in the Beef Round Up at Clemson. Immediately after in early August the NJAA LEAD Conference in Oklahoma City, OK, gave Sally Yon and Ann Blumer leadership training and educational seminars.

For many juniors August brings the start of a new school year. Our legislature did not like the dent this put in the tourist season so next year they legislated that no one may start school until the middle of August. This may put exams back after Christmas. So much for a carefree Christmas break.

Now that fall is here the fairs are in full swing. Many of the fairs have done away with the livestock shows. Our agricultural way of life is experienced by fewer families each year because of the development of our farm lands into housing developments. With the additional loss of the livestock and agricultural part of these fairs, we miss an educational opportunity to give our city folk a small taste of farm life.

Some of the opportunities to gather and share facts and fellowship with other cattle friends are happening this fall.

South Carolina Cattle EXPO is on October 6 and 7 at the T. ED Garrison Arena, Clemson, SC. Call Pickens County Extension Office at (864) 878-1394 or rdm95573@bellsouth.net.

The South Carolina State Fair always takes place in October 11-22 at The Fairgrounds in Columbia, SC. The Open Angus Show begins on Friday, October 20 at 10. The Junior Angus Show will be Saturday, October 21 at 5:30 PM. The last thing will be showmanship. Don’t you know those cows and kids will be tired when they are trying to show their best?

South Carolina Angus breeders are preparing for their farm sales at the same time some are trying to get their Angus groomed for the local and state fairs.

Our member, Dale Thompson, at Hilltop Angus is having a sale called “The Virginia Spotlight Sale” on October 9th at Sugarloaf Farm in Staunton, VA. He will deliver to the Southeast any Angus bought by the producers here. Call Dale with questions at (910) 975-0753.

On October 29th Walter Shealy is having Black Grove Female Angus Sale at Black Grove Farm in Newberry, SC. You may contact Walter at (803) 276-9385 or bg@wshealy.com.

Yon Family Farms is selling 70 coming two-year-old Angus bulls on November 4, 2006, on the Yon Family Farm, Ridge Spring, SC. If you need information contact Kevin Yon at (803) 685-5048 or kyon@pbtcomm.net or www.yonfamilyfarms.com.

The SC Angus adults are gearing up for the North American International Livestock Exposition on November 12-14 in Louisville, KY. Ballots were sent to the AAA members to elect delegates to represent each of the states in the American Angus Association Annual Meeting. As reported on the www.angus.org web page our delegates and alternates are:

Delegate
Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring
Walter Shealy III, Newberry
Ted R. Bartee, Clover

Alternate
Evelyn G. Edmunds, Clover
Ted S. Bourne, Donalds
Michael Scharberg, Lynchburg

The Annual Banquet will be Monday evening, November 13th, at the Executive Inn West Hotel. Special honorees at the banquet will include the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Outstanding Leadership Award winner and inductees into the Angus Heritage Foundation.

The Angus show schedule will follow the same schedule this year as it did last year. The junior show will be Sunday, Nov. 12; the Roll of Victory (ROV) bulls and cow-calf pairs will show Monday, Nov. 13; and ROV females will show Tuesday, Nov. 14.

We always like to keep up the “calving” of our Angus as well as our families. Bailey and Brandi Bartee are the proud parents of a baby boy, Granger Bass Bartee, born August 1, 2006. Bailey grew up showing Angus as a SC Junior. He now serves as a financial advisor with Wachovia Securities in Charlotte, NC. Brandi has retired for awhile from any “paid” job to take care of Granger. The grandparents, Ted and Windy, look forward to another junior showing Angus in about 9 years.

May all of your achievements show your best effort. May your teams and your Angus come out on top this fall whether in football or fairs. Angus don’t play football.
