Hot and dry days made the end of summer bleak in South Carolina. The hay crop was poor. The pastures are burning up. Cattle are selling lower due to the lack of good grazing. We long for a share of those rains that other parts of the country, like Texas and the Midwest, have been flooded by.

Winners from the Summer Angus Shows

Yet we have much for which to be thankful. Our South Carolina Angus youth have outshone themselves. At the National Junior Angus Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, our South Carolina Junior Angus Association won the STATE HERDSMANSHIP AWARD for 15 head and less.

Also while there, Ann Blumer, the South Carolina Junior Angus president, was the first from South Carolina to be elected as a director on the National Junior Angus Board. Ann was one of six elected to represent the Angus youth from all over the United States. Ann will be expected to help with events and shows during her two-year term. She will have to find a way to fit all these Angus events into her already busy schedule while still going to class and playing soccer at Millsaps in Jackson, Mississippi.

An excerpt from the Angus Journal news release about the National Junior Angus Association election follows:

“National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members from across the United States met at their annual meeting, held during the 2007 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), July 1-7 in Tulsa, Okla.

Voting delegates elected six directors to serve a two-year term on the NJAA board of directors. Officers beginning their second year on the board were announced during the awards ceremony on July 6.

“Candidates from nine states ran for the six open positions on the board. Delegates cast their ballots for six candidates after each submitted an application, gave a presentation, answered impromptu questions and completed round-table interviews. A brief biography of the newly elected directors follows.

Ann Blumer is the daughter of Adam and Nancy Blumer, Chesnee, S.C. She attends Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where she majors in business administration and is a member of the soccer team. Ann has been active in junior Angus programs, serving on the South Carolina Junior Angus Association board and attending LEAD (Leaders Engaged in Angus Development) Conferences.”

The LEAD conference was held in Perry, Ga. this August 3-4. Ann Blumer was able to attend to learn leadership skills for the Angus industry that will benefit her the rest of her life in whatever profession she chooses.

Teddi and Breann Steadman won many honors with their Angus at some of the big Angus shows this summer. The Steadman girls won division champions and even a grand champion at the Eastern Regional in Harrisburg, Pa.. Before that they won champions, i.e. owned intermediate champion female, owned reserve summer heifer calf champion and early summer heifer calf champion, at the 2007 National Atlantic Preview Junior Angus Show in Timmonium, Md.

SC Junior Beef Round Up Report

During the Beef Round Up on August 4-5 our Angus juniors continue to win honors. After they had taken the Junior Cattlemen’s test on that Saturday morning, they had to be ready for showmanship in the afternoon. Some of our SC juniors won awards and scholarships with their contest results. Drake Yon won a scholarship and was the intermediate sales talk winner. Samuel Hall and Sally Yon won savings bonds in the scholarship competition. Sally Yon was the runner-up in the senior sales talk. Many of our juniors made the finals in their showmanship divisions.

On Sunday the Beef Round Up brought more successes to our SC Juniors.

40 exhibitors from South Carolina and our surrounding states showed 58 Angus heifers. Our SC juniors won the following with their Angus. You might say, “The Yons have it.”

Sally Yon won grand champion with Yon Witch T39, a Sept. '06 Future Direction daughter that was also the calf champion. Corbin Yon showed the reserve champion, the senior yearling entry, which was the senior division champion, by Hyline Right Time 338.

The Yon's entries were also the bred and owned winners. The junior division champion was Sally Yon's January '06 entry, Yon Witch S392. Chisholm Clark won the intermediate champion with his August '06, Rito 6I6 daughter. The reserve division champions were shown by Sydney Cox (Calf), Austin Groce (Intermediate), John Petty (Junior) and Destiny McCauley(Senior). Other class winners from South Carolina included Jenna McCollough, Katie Pruitt, Patrick McGill and Cory Watt. Sadly, Savannah Groce was unable to show on Sunday due to a kidney stone attack.

The complete results are listed below:

Looking Forward to Fall Events

In the fall the days will cool and the fairs will begin. A few farm children will be helping their families get ready for a sale. The Yons will be one of those preparing for their Yon Family Farm sale on November 3. November 12-13 is the Angus Show at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. Also hold the date of November 30 and December 1 for the Ag Expo at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena.

Before you know it the weather will have broken, the rains will come (we hope) and school will have begun. In South Carolina the legislature made a law that schools cannot begin until after the middle of August. The purpose is not so that the farm children can help get the crops gathered but to help increase the number of workers and customers in August for the tourist business. By the way, the coastal businesses don’t mind the hot, dry days. It provides more beach time for the tourists.
