Blumer wins a seat on the National Junior Angus Association Board

Anne Blumer

Ann Blumer, on the left, SCJAA president has been elected to the NJAA Board on July 6, 2007 at the National Junior Angus Show in Oklahoma. Dana May has been serving as a Director of the NJAA this past year.

Things are hot in SC and the hot news is Ann Blumer won a seat on the National Junior Angus Association Board! While we simmer in our dry summer, our SC Juniors are showing at the National Junior Angus Show in Oklahoma. Ann Blumer was running for one of six directorships on the board of the National Junior Angus and she won! This is a first for SC. The SC Juniors also placed first in herdsmanship at the National Show. Ann Blumer received her gold award and a $1000 scholarship from the Angus Foundation. Quite a show!

Hot and dry are our ads for the new SC Angus Directory. Ads and the checks are slow getting in. The directory is always like pulling teeth. So those of you who haven’t already can still send in your dues and ads to Windy Bartee, SCAA, 1717 St. Paul Church Road, Clover, SC 29710. Whole page ads are $150. Half-page ads are $100. Dues are $20 to be included in this edition.

Hot and dry is our SC beach. Whenever beach time comes around, someone draws the short straw to stay home to take care of the chores, cows and dogs. Who is it in your family? ( Ted got it.)

After the National Show our juniors are hurrying back to show at the Junior Beef Round-Up at Clemson on August 2-5. At the same time as the AAA LEAD Conference in Athens, GA. Decisions, decisions, decisions! Some of our folks may atttend the All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity in Louisville, KY, on July 26-29. The next thing you know it is time for school to start. Time flies when you are having fun with Angus.

National Junior Angus Show has come and gone but the report is not final.

The following is a report from the AAA:

2007 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), July 1-7, in Tulsa, Okla.

This event showcases the youth of our breed and all activities of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). It is the largest event the Association coordinates during the year, and it is well worth your time if you’ve never attended.
The Oklahoma and Arkansas Angus associations — adult, junior and auxiliary — will host the event, themed “The American Dream,” at the Tulsa Expo Center.
Juniors will exhibit heifers, bulls, cow-calf pairs and steers. There is a carcass contest with special emphasis on meeting Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) product specifications.
Angus youth will participate in public speaking, poster design, creative writing, graphic design, photography and state junior association scrapbook contests. Rules for all of the contests are available online at NJAA Online.
State showmanship winners will compete for national honors at the 41st National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest. Another highlight for the week is the Auxiliary-sponsored All-American Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) Cook-Off.
Delegates from state junior associations will elect six new directors to the NJAA Board. South Carolina sent Ann Blumer to run. John Petty and Teddi Steadman are serving as delegates. We will know if our own Ann Blumer was elected by the next issue.

Teddi and Michael Steadman are Champions!

The results are in from the American Angus Eastern Regional. The Bourne/Steadman edition made South Carolina proud. See the report that follows from the AAA:

Register Now for 2007 National Angus Conference and Tour

Now is the time to register for the 2007 National Angus Conference and Tour, a “Heartland Homecoming,” set for Aug. 29-31 in Peoria, Ill. Cattle producers should register now to ensure they meet the early registration deadline, July 27. The American Angus AssociationSM sponsors the event, along with corporate partners Purina Mills LLC and Alpharma Animal Health. A day-long conference program is followed by a two-day tour of Illinois Angus herds hosted by the Illinois Angus Association.
“The American Angus Association is excited to bring the conference and tour to Illinois, the birthplace of the Association,” says Shelia Stannard, director of communications and events for the Association. “We have secured a slate of top industry experts for the conference, and the Illinois Angus breeders are rolling out the red carpet for the tour at their various operations.”
The conference is Wednesday, Aug. 29, and features experts that will address topics ranging from reproduction and cow herd efficiencies to producing a high quality end product. Program speakers include Bill Beal, Virginia Tech; Doug Parrett, Tom Carr and Larry Berger, all with University of Illinois; Mark Polzer, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLC; Sally Northcutt, Bill Bowman and Jerry Cassady, all with American Angus Association.
The tour will kick off Wednesday evening at Weaver Angus Farm, Peoria. The tour continues on Thursday, Aug. 30, and begins with two stops in Peoria at manufacturing sites. The Caterpillar Inc., Track Type Tractor facility will feature the construction of Cat’s largest tractors. A stop at Keystone Steel and Wire will showcase the making of fencing supplies like wire and panels. The Illinois Angus Association is hosting a cattle stop at the Woodford County Fairgrounds, Eureka. All Illinois breeders are encouraged to showcase their Angus genetics at this centralized stop. The tour will continue to Werner Angus, Cordova.
The final day of the tour includes three Angus operations. The tour on Friday, Aug. 31 will begin at Dameron Angus Farm, Lexington. The final stops include Prairie View Farm, Gridley, and Sauk Valley Angus, Rock Falls.
Registration for the event is just $75 per person if you register by the early deadline of July 27. After that, the registration fee is $125. Registration forms are online. The Caterpillar tour only allows 220 people, and those who register first will have first opportunity to tour the facility. Other tours are being planned for the same time.
The Holiday Inn City Centre is the headquarters of the 2007 National Angus Conference & Tour. A block of rooms has been reserved at a nightly rate of $87 plus tax per room. All attendees must make their own room reservations by calling the hotel at 309-674-2500. Negotiated rates in the Angus block will be available until August 5. After that date, reservations will be made at a space and availability basis.
For more information about this event, contact Shelia Stannard or Monica Jordan at 816-383-5100.
The National Angus Conference & Tour is just one of the events the American Angus Association conducts for its 34,000 members and thousands of commercial cattle producers nationwide. For more information about this event, or other Association programs, visit www.angus.org.
