Angus have entered the ring

Whoever said or sang “Summer time and the living is easy”? Now that school is out the hard work begins. The Angus have entered the ring in South Carolina with the juniors holding on to their halters, hopefully.

Teddi and Breann Steadman of Greenwood, SC, traveled to the 2007 Atlantic National Regional Preview Junior Angus Show in Timonium, MD, on May 25-26. Breann placed second in junior B showmanship.

Teddi Steadman’s Dameron Miss Emulous 5109 won owned intermediate champion female. Her Dameron Bardot 6136 won owned reserve summer heifer calf champion.

On top of all that Teddi’s Dameron Bardot 6136 won early summer heifer calf champion at the 2007 Atlantic National Super Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show on May 27.

Then the SC Junior Angus Show began at Clemson at the Cattle Complex next to the T. Ed Garrison Arena on Saturday, June 2, 2007.

Alex Tolbert from Nicholson, GA, judged the classes. He is a graduate of NE Oklahoma and chairman of the board of directors of the NJAA. While at Oklahoma he served on the judging team. Dana May, a director of the NJAA, came from Wisconsin to help as ring person. The American Angus Association was well represented by their regional representative, David Gazda.

The SC Junior Angus Show was dedicated to the memory of Daniel Jarrard. He was killed in an accident this spring. The SC Angus Association has started a scholarship fund in Daniel’s memory. Daniel’s family is Jim and Emily Jarrard, his sister Rachel Shore has a two-week-old baby who is named Danni Rae in memory of Daniel.

Showmanship was first while everyone was fresh and rested. The plan was that maybe the cows and kids perform better at the beginning rather than the end of the day when everyone is hot and tired (and usually dirtier.) The Edmunds Family had made a donation to the juniors for showmanship to honor their matriarch, Evelyn Edmunds. Evelyn was named to the charter class of the SC Angus Hall of Fame in March at the 2007 Carolina Angus Futurity annual banquet.

Showmanship leaped to a start with Ann Blumer winning the senior division. She will represent SC in showmanship at the National Junior Angus Show in Oklahoma.

Katie Pruitt came in first in the intermediate class for 13 to 16-year-olds. The junior showmanship class for 9 to12-year-olds had Corbin Yon at the top. In the beginner class a newcomer Shelbi Tucker, only 8 years old won.

Some of the top winners in the rest of the show follow. Elizabeth Edmunds took the top honors in the bull class and champion bull with EE New Rito Power. John Petty’s Pettys Marshall Legend 806 got the reserve champion bull trophy.

In the heifer classes Breann Steadman won junior heifer calf leading Cedar Creek Lady 2702. Her sister, Teddi Steadman won the late senior heifer class with Cedar Creek Eulima 2643.

The early senior heifers were in two classes. Destiny McCauley won the first one with BCF 2V1 Rita S253 ET. The B class was topped by Breann Steadman with Gambles Lass 9106. Calf champion was Breann Steadman followed with reserve calf champion winner, Destiny McCauley.

In the early summer yearlings, Austin Groce won with Gambles Ever Lady. He also took the intermediate championship trophy.

Carly Watt’s CWF Miss Power 41-93 S103 was shown by Tanner Rhodes who brought home first place in late junior yearlings. Yon Witch S392 led by Sally Yon won the early junior yearling class. She also won the junior champion purple rosette.

The senior yearlings had Meldons Charmette in class A shown by Katie Pruitt. In the B class Sally Yon took the blue ribbon with Yon Hazel S42 and then the purple rosette for senior champion. Katie Pruitt’s heifer won the reserve senior champion.

Sally Yon stepped out with her Yon Witch S 42 for grand champion. Meldons Charmette with Katie Pruitt holding the halter was awarded the reserve grand champion rosette.

Grand champion bred and owned was Sally’s Yon Hazel S42. The reserve grand champion bred and owned honor went to Teddi Steadman with her Cedar Creek Eulima 2643.

Judge Alex Tolbert closed the show with complimentary remarks about the quality of the cattle and the comment, “Nothing could be finer than Angus in South Carolina.” He didn’t try to sing it. Now that he has graduated, Alex plans to work for the USDA as a marketing reporter in Sioux Falls, SD.

SCJAA elects new officers

After the show the juniors settled down to elect their new officers and directors. Ann Blumer agreed to serve as president again as this is her last year of eligibility as a SC junior. Vice president is Sally Yon. Savannah Groce was elected secretary-treasurer. The Steadman sisters, Teddi and Breann, will serve as queen and princess and assist in giving out ribbons at the Eastern Regional and National Junior Angus Shows.

John Petty and Sally Yon were elected delegates to represent the SC juniors by voting for officers and new directors at the National Junior Angus annual meeting in July. Ann Blumer is seeking their votes as she is running for director of the NJAA. Teddi Steadman will go as an alternate delegate. The delegates must be at least 14 to be elected. All the SC juniors present agreed to serve as directors of the SCJAA.

The advisors, Lydia Yon, Ted Bourne and Jesse Adkins, have done such a great job they were re-elected unanimously. Dues were discussed as going up to $15 for next year. Ted Bourne and Gene Pruitt volunteered to buy all the juniors a tee shirt and polo shirt to wear on trips and at shows.

Donations accepted for Daniel Jarrard Scholarship fund

The juniors also voted to work on fundraisers to benefit the Daniel Jarrard scholarship fund. The SCAA’s treasurer, Mike Johnson, will accept donations. Make checks out to SCAA for Daniel Jarrard Scholarship c/o Mike Johnson, 4368 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, SC 29355.

SC Juniors travel to shows and events

As you can tell this summer will be busy. We don’t call that easy. The Southern Angus Show will be in Perry, GA, on June 8-9. Next Harrisburg, PA, will host the Eastern Regional on June 22-24th at the Farm Show Complex using the theme “We have Angus..tude.” Then some of our juniors will be at the National Junior Angus Show in Tulsa, OK, on July 1-7. Ann Blumer, our SCJAA president, is running for a director’s seat on the NJAA Board. The NJAA election will take place at the annual meeting during this show.

Then the NJAA LEAD Conference, i.e. Leaders Engaged in Angus Development, takes place in Athens, GA, the same weekend August 2-5 as our Clemson Junior Beef Round-Up. There the theme is “Life’s a Peach so... Eat it Up.”
