Wow! When will it ever rain? And the temperature is still like the middle of summer here in South Carolina and many other places in the news.

The Cattlemen’s e-mail sends the news that there is tax relief for drought: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued its guidance publication on the deferral of capital gains taxes from drought-related sales of livestock. NCBA has continually worked for changes to Section 1033 (e) of the Uniform Tax Code to extend the tax deferment period for weather-related sales of livestock — known as involuntary conversions. Last fall, the IRS announced it would extend tax relief for ranchers who were forced to sell off large portions of their breeding stock as a result of drought conditions. Read more in Cattlemen's Capitol Concerns under “Tax Relief for Drought.”

Another tip for cattlemen is found in the e-mail from the NCBA. The statistics recorded for the last 15 years is that November, December and January bring the lowest prices for slaughter cattle in the market. The tendency is that more cattle are sold in these months, thus flooding the market. The old rule of supply and demand reduces the prices for beef. The article suggests considering keeping open cows until the price goes up. That would be great if you have plenty of feed and hay for the winter. This year it will be especially difficult to take this advice due to the poor hay crop in SC. Advice from the experts must be tempered with the circumstances of each cattleman.

Trick or treat the South Carolina Angus Association’s officers and directors as they meet at 4:00 on October 28 at Logan’s Roadhouse in Greenville. At the meeting they will begin planning for the Carolina Angus Futurity on March 15, 2008, at the Clemson T. Ed Garrison Arena Cattle Complex. The SCAA annual meeting on Friday night, March 14, 2008, always precedes at the Ramada Inn in Clemson. Maybe October will treat South Carolina with rain along with Halloween tricks.

November will bring the annual meeting for the American Angus Association. Members of the American Angus Association (AAA) are in Louisville, Kentucky, for the 124th Annual Convention of Delegates, and Angus show set for November 10-13. The delegates from all over the United States will assemble in Louisville during the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) on November 12, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. to elect the new leaders of the AAA.

South Carolina Angus people voted by mailed ballot to elect the following delegates: Kevin Yon, chairman of the delegation, Walter Shealy, III, and Evelyn Edmunds. The alternates elected are Ted Bartee, Neil McPhail, and Ted Bourne. John Crouch, executive vice president of the AAA, encourages each state to show up with a full delegation. An open meeting to meet the candidates will be Sunday at 2:30 in the KFEC-Upper Level South Wing.

A full schedule of meetings, educational programs, social opportunities and shows are set during the NAILE. On Sunday morning at 8 the junior heifer show and the AAA Ladies Auxiliary breakfast both begin. Monday begins bright and early at 8 with the bull and cow/calf shows. Tuesday follows with the open Angus female classes. More information can be found at the AAA Web site.

Some of our local Angus breeders have planned farm sales. Billy McLeod and the Black Crest Farms will have a sale on October 14th at Sumter, SC. November 3 is a big day for a sale for the Yon Family Farms in Ridge Springs, SC. In addition our neighbors, the North Carolina Angus Association, are having their Down East Angus Sale at the Sampson County Livestock Arena in Clinton, NC, on November 3. Angus sales are reigning (excuse the pun) all over so pick your sale treat and go.

One treat is free! Store registration certificates electronically free - Since April 1, 2007 you may choose the electronic storage feature at no cost to store the paper registration certificates of existing registered Angus cattle. Producers can receive a paper registration certificate at no charge, when removed from electronic storage. For more information contact AAA or call Shelia Stannard at 816-383-5152 or

The fall cattle shows are also reigning at the local fairs. The South Carolina State Fair will feature Angus on October 19 and 20 at the SC State Fair grounds in Columbia, SC. The Angus open show takes place on Friday the 19th. The juniors show their Angus on Saturday. October 20th. Support your juniors and their Angus at the fairs by going to see them. Sometimes you may be able to take in a football game on the same day!

Anyway if it rains you can stay dry in the show ring. We all hope that rain will be a problem we can face soon.

If you have news for the SCAA please notify Windy Bartee at 803-222-7533 or tumblet8@bellsouth.net. The SCAA web page is www.scangus.org. Banner ads are $50/ month plus the set up fee.
