Time flies when you are having summer fun!! Both fall and school began even before the summer ended and the temperature dropped. Still no rain, to speak of, in South Carolina. The leaves on the many of our trees are going straight to brown. Leaf peeping will not be up to par this year.

But cow peeping continues to thrive. The fairs have begun and people are peeping in the barns at the cow show beauties- both bovine and otherwise.

The York County 4-H had their Fall Livestock Show on Friday and Saturday, September 7-8, 2007, at Triple Creek Farm on Highway 322 outside Rock Hill. Many different farm animals as well as Angus paraded around the ring. The Angus parade began about 1:00 on Saturday with 13 Angus entering the ring.

Showmanship Results

Showmanship classes for all the youth with beef cattle displayed the youngsters’ skills at handling their own animal. First in the class for those 5- to 10-year-olds was won by Elizabeth Edmunds of Clover, SC. Her brother John Wesley Edmunds won the class for 11- to 14-year-olds. Another junior, J.T. Price, also from Clover won the senior showmanship class for juniors of 15-20 years. All of the first place winners were showing Angus.

The senior showmanship winner, J.T. Price, was awarded a $250 scholarship, donated by Tumble-T- Bar-T Angus Farm.

2007 Angus Leaders’ Boot Camp on September 25-26

The American Angus Association has planned Angus Leaders’ Boot Camp in an effort to enhance leadership skills in the members and strengthen communications and cooperative efforts between local, state, and regional associations and the American Angus Association. Steve McPhail, Sr., SCAA president, and Lewis Smith, SCAA vice president, have planned to attend the St. Joseph, Missouri, event.

Cattlemen's Boot Camp

The American Angus Association and Angus Foundation are conducting Cattlemen’s Boot Camps in conjunction with universities across the country this fall and winter. The Boot Camps are two-day educational events designed for all cattle producers and cover a variety of industry segments.

  • The University of Kentucky is hosting a Boot Camp set for Sept. 21-22 in Lexington, Ky., at the Fayette County Extension Office.
  • Penn State University is hosting a Boot Camp set for Oct. 29-30 in State College, Pa., at the Beef & Sheep Research Center.
  • Iowa State University will host a Boot Camp, Dec. 18-19 in Ames, Iowa. Watch for details on this Boot Camp and others coming up this winter.

State Fair, SC Ag Expo and other Fall Peeping Events

The South Carolina State Fair will open the barns for Angus peeping on October 18-20 at the fairgrounds in Columbia, SC. See the schedule at www.scstatefair.org.

The South Carolina Angus breed will be represented with a booth at the SC Ag Expo on November 30-December 1 at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena. Come help tend the Angus booth and visit with other cattlemen telling about the Angus breed.

Cattlemen and Angus breeders will be peeping at the Black Crest Angus beauties on Sunday, October 14 at 1 PM in Sumter, SC. More peeping at Angus will occur at the Yon Family Farm on Saturday, November 3rd in Ridge Springs, SC.

Delegates Elected to the American Angus Association Annual Meeting

On November 11-13 the Angus breed will be shown in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. The South Carolina Angus members have elected delegates to represent them at the American Angus Association annual meeting on November 12 during the NAILE.

Delegate
Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring
Walter Shealy III, Newberry
Evelyn G. Edmunds, Clover
Alternate
Ted R. Bartee, Clover
Neil B. McPhail, Seneca
Ted S. Bourne, Donalds

During the NAILE the delegates and others will be peeping at the top representatives of the Angus breed as they march around the ring.

Have you taken a peep at the back cover of the National Cattlemen’s Magazine and seen South Carolina’s Kevin Yon in the Angus ad. Watch out professional models...you’ve got competition!

Many other events and fairs scattered over the Carolinas will provide many other opportunities to peep at beautiful Angus and their showmen. May time fly bringing rain. Maybe rain will scatter over the pastures and the Angus in them during the shorter fall days.

In Memorium

It is with a sadness that we note that our friend Joyce Crapps died at her home at 853 Fairview Church Road in Kinards, SC on August 25, 2007. She is survived by her husband Phillip O. Crapps, a son, Phillip James Crapps of Whitmire, a daughter, Kensla Joy Veal of Kinards and other family, including 5 grandchildren. Kensla and their grandson, Jason Scott Crapps were active members of the SC Junior Angus. Joyce and her husband, Phil, were strong supporters of the SC juniors. Phil often drove a trailer hauling Angus for the juniors as they traveled across the country to Angus shows.

The funeral service was Monday, August 27 at Fairview Baptist Church with interment in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
