Our pond had been looking like a mud puddle. It was so low that the Canadian geese turned up their beaks and passed by our place. But now our mud puddle resembles a pond again although it still is mighty low. I noticed the geese this morning grazing in our neighbor’s field. His pond still looks better to them. We are grateful for the almost 9 inches of rain that treated us as a spin off from Hurricane Fay. We are still wondering if the subsequent hurricanes will send more rain. We hope!! We also hope they will not harm our brothers and sisters that might be more directly in their paths. May the hurricanes be more of a treat than a trick.
After the rain falling, followed by the leaves falling from the trees, we are falling into fall with Angus sales. If you can go, you’ll be in for some real treats -- food and good Angus. Walter Shealy of Black Grove in Newberry, SC plans a female sale on Sunday, October 26. Yon Family Farms will sell bulls and females on Saturday, November 1 in Ridge Springs, SC. Ads in this issue will give details.
Angus Show of the Beef Round-UP
Lydia Yon reports on the results of the Angus Show of the Beef Round-Up at Clemson on August 2-3. This was the last big show at the end of the summer before school in SC began.
"The Junior Beef Round-Up, held the first weekend in August was a great
success with 28 exhibitors exhibiting 43 head of Angus. The Grand Champion
was led by Garrett Metz from Iva, SC with his October 2007 heifer, Rosewood
Erica 780T. The Reserve Champion (and Bred & Owned champion) was Yon Witch
T39, a senior yearling exhibited by Sally Yon of Ridge Spring, SC. Bred & Owned Reserve Champion honors went to Cory Watt from Iva, SC with CWF Elba.
Division Champions were shown by Garrett Metz, John Petty and Sally Yon.
Reserve Division Winners were shown by Cory Watt, Matt Vaughn, and Corbin Yon.
"Other highlights of the weekend included 3 of our SC Angus Exhibitors
winning $500 scholarships based on their cattlemen's quiz, a written essay,
and showmanship placing. They were Cory Watt and Tanner Rhodes, both from
Iva, SC and Chelsie Goodman, from Ridge Spring, SC.
"The Intermediate Sales Talk Division, Cory Watt was named the winner and Drake Yon from Ridge Spring was the runner-up. Garrett Metz won his Division in showmanship and several of our other juniors made the finals. It was a good kick-off to a
busy show season as our juniors make their way to county shows in Abbeville,
Saluda, Anderson, Greenwood, Newberry, Spartanburg, York, and maybe a few
others before the grand finale at the State Fair in October."
On Halloween the American Angus Association has a little trick. They announced a surprise schedule change for the American Royal Show in Kansas City, MO in case you plan to go:
American Royal announces changes to Angus schedule
Angus exhibitors will want to note changes to the American Royal schedule later this fall. The junior heifer and the super-point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus shows will both take place Friday, Oct. 31, rather than on two separate days as in the past. The junior show will begin at 8 a.m., with the super-point ROV Show to follow.
Another treat follows Halloween. November brings a big election for us all! Of course we are talking about the election of officers at the annual meeting of the American Angus Association in Louisville, KY on November 17. South Carolina has elected the following delegates and alternates to represent them at that election:
SC Delegates:
Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring
Walter Shealy III, Newberry
Evelyn G. Edmunds, Clover
Ted R. Bartee, Clover
SC Alternates:
Ted S. Bourne, Donalds
Shirley Brown, Tigerville
R. Eugene Pruitt Jr., Abbeville
