Meanwhile in November your SCAA delegates trekked to Louisville to cast their votes at the American Angus Association annual meeting. Kevin Yon, Walter Shealy, and Ted Bartee went as elected delegates. Carroll O’Neal was the alternate for Evelyn Edmunds. The press release from the AAA follows:

Delegates Elect Leaders at American Angus Association’s 125th Annual Meeting

Jay King, Rock Falls, Ill., was elected the American Angus Association® president and chairman of the board at the group’s 125th Annual Convention of Delegates, Nov. 17, 2008, in Louisville, Ky. He follows Paul Hill, Bidwell, Ohio.

Bill Davis, Sidney, Mont., was chosen by the delegates to serve as vice president and vice chairman of the Board. Joe Hampton, Mount Ulla, N.C., will serve as treasurer for the year. Five individuals were elected to the Association’s board of directors, including Arlen Sawyer, Bassett, Neb.; Doug Schroeder, Clarence, Iowa; Darrell Silveira, Firebaugh, Calif.; Jim Sitz, Dillon, Mont.; and Gordon Stucky, Kingman, Kan.

More than 360 elected delegates from 40 states, the District of Columbia and Canada represented American Angus Association members and conducted the business of the Association during the annual meeting and election. The meeting was at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Super Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show. Commemorative activities were also conducted to celebrate the Association’s 125th Anniversary.

Our South Carolina neighbor, Joe Hampton, from Mount Ulla has moved up the ladder to become the AAA treasurer on the board of directors. Garrett Metz from Starr was there in the stiff competition to show his Angus heifer. He placed seventh in his class.

2009 Carolina Futurity Plans

Meanwhile back at the ranch Lewis Smith as chairman and VP of the SCAA was working hard to finalize plans for the Carolina Angus Futurity on March 21, 2009. After much consideration and discussion the plans jelled. Mike Jones will run the auction while Jeremy Haag of the Angus Hall of Fame will manage the sale. To avoid complications with transfers, the registration papers must be turned in before the animal can be in the auction. A selection team including Lewis Smith and someone from the Hall will be cruising through the farms in late December or early January to choose only the quality Angus for the sale.. One other prerequisite for the Carolina Futurity is that the Angus owner must be a member of the SCAA to enter an animal. If you have questions, call Lewis Smith (864-261-6982) or Jeremy Haag(816-532-0811).

Speaking of new, a new restaurant has been selected. The South Carolina Angus Association banquet and annual meeting takes place on Friday, March 20 the night before the auction. The location is new. The banquet has moved to Tucker’s Restaurant, 3501 Clemson Blvd (US 76), Anderson, SC. The location is convenient to hotels off I-85 at Exit 19 and only a short ride to the T. Ed Garrison Arena. This event includes an introduction to the elected officers. Page ads for a new directory will be auctioned.

Mark your calendars to save the date.

As the new year begins, we look forward to new experiences and better markets but remembering to be thankful for the many blessings and a way of life that we sometimes take for granted.
