Carolina Angus Futurity

March wind blows Angus and breeders to the Carolina Angus Futurity at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena. Select Angus females from some of the best herds in South Carolina will be auctioned at noon on Saturday, March 15th. A selection committee made up of Jeremy Haag from the Angus Hall of Fame; Lewis Smith, the Futurity sale chairman; and past SCAA presidents, Ted Bourne and Gene Pruitt traveled the state for a couple of days to choose the 60 select females.

On Friday, March 14th the South Carolina Angus Association members and guests will gather for the banquet and annual meeting at the Ramada Inn in Clemson, SC. The social hour begins at 6:00 PM. The dinner and annual meeting start at 7:00 PM. The newly elected directors will be introduced. The Carolina Futurity will be dedicated to Bobby Mullikin for his work and dedication to the Angus breed, the SC Junior and SC Angus Associations. Nominations to the SC Angus Hall of Fame will be named and honored.

The dinner menu includes prime rib of beef, green bean casserole, smashed potatoes, garden salad, tea or coffee and a wonderful selection of desserts. The cost of the plate dinner is $20 for adults, $10 for children under 9. Children under 3 are free. In making reservations for a room at the Ramada Inn (864-654-7501) mention the SCAA for a rate of $72.00. Information and the catalogue should be available on the web page: www.scangus.org.

Stephanie Clark is chairing a silent auction on Saturday, March 15th at the Futurity to benefit the SC Juniors. Call Stephanie (864-243-2214) to help.

Bull Sale

The 2008 Clemson Bull Test Sale was Saturday, February 2 at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena Cattle Complex. Billy McLeod of Black Crest had the top-indexing Angus senior bull and the top-indexing Angus junior bull. The crowd was there but the prices were not. The drought and economy took their toll on the auction. Fifty-seven bulls sold for a total of $86,150 for an average of $1511.40. Sixteen commercial black heifers were sold for a total of $13,550 with an average of $847.

The Friday before the Clemson Bull Test Sale Peter Wilkins of the SC Cattlemen awarded Billy McLeod from Black Crest a trophy for his bull in the Clemson bull test. He won the Highest Weight per Day of Age Senior Bull. Neil Boyd from Paul Boyd Angus was recognized with a trophy for the Highest Average Daily Gain Junior Bull in the test.

After the sale the SCAA officers and directors met to iron out the details for the Carolina Angus Futurity. The Daniel Jarrard Memorial Scholarship application deadline is March 1. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual meeting and banquet on Friday, March 14. Applications are available from Windy Bartee at tumblet8@bellsouth.net or www.scangus.org.
