Rain, bulls, cows, and babies top our news for February.
Rain
Our area of the nation has been in extreme drought conditions. Thank goodness we have had some rain since Christmas. You might think it is raining Angus bulls too.

Bulls

February brings out the bull in South Carolina. We mean the good Angus bulls. Each Saturday we have a bull sale that includes lots of Angus bulls. If you want to go, call one of our members: Larry Olson (803-284-3343 ext 231, LOLSON@clemson.edu) at Clemson, Billy McLeod (803-481-4451, 803-491-6798 cell) in Sumter, Kevin Yon (803-685-5048 in Ridge Springs, kyon@pbtcomm.net), or Neil McPhail(864-972-3192, tokeena@innova.net) in Seneca for more information. Check out our web site, www.scangus.org for times and places.
The SC Angus officers and directors will meet on the first Saturday in February immediately after the Clemson Bull Test Sale at Clemson’s Cattle Complex next to the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Clemson, SC. The main purpose is to complete the plans for the Carolina Angus Futurity on March 14-15, 2008.
Cows
As we continue to prepare for our March 14-15th Carolina Angus Futurity at the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Clemson, the American Angus Hall of Fame and the SCAA committee visit our SC Angus farms to select the very best Angus females for the sale. Please have your registration papers ready. Lewis is chairman of the sale this year. Call Lewis Smith (864-261-6982) or Ted Bourne (864-379-2253, 864-223-0188) for more information.
Plan on attending the annual meeting and banquet at the Ramada Inn in Clemson on Friday, March 14. The dinner and meeting are at 7 pm, preceded by a social hour at 6 pm. A prime Angus beef dinner will be served with potatoes, green beans, salad, dessert and drink at $20 for adults, $10 for children under 9. The newly elected SCAA directors will be introduced. One of our members will be honored with the dedication of the Futurity.
Then on Saturday mosey on over to the Cattle Complex for the Carolina Angus Futurity at noon. A very select group of Angus females, some with calves at their side and bred back, will be offered at auction. Also Stephanie Clark has agreed to head up another silent auction to benefit the juniors. Parents and juniors will need to pitch in to help her. Stephanie’s phone number is 864-243-2214. A block of rooms is reserved at the Ramada Inn (864-654-7501). Mention SCAA when you call for reservations at the rate @ $72.00 plus tax.
Babies

We have had new births since we last wrote. We always have Angus being born, but these births are of from the Angus owners and their offspring.
Cedar Creek in Donalds, SC, is proud of a new baby boy from Ted Scott Bourne, Jr. and Tabby. Ted Scott Bourne III was born on November 15, 2007. They call him “Tripp”, and he’ll definitely be a trip for them. Ted and Judy are the proud grandparents.
Another former SC Junior Bailey Bartee and his wife Brandi had a girl on the last day of 2007. She came into the world with a birth weight of 8 lbs, 12 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. They branded her with Zetta Grace.
These babies are in addition to other November babies already reported from Kelley McPhail and Mike Ryan and Caroline Smith and Jon Lamb. We are thankful to have all these new births in our SCAA herd.
Memorial Scholarship
Our South Carolina Angus Association and community were saddened last year by the tragic loss of one of our SC Juniors. Daniel Jarrard was an outstanding 16-year-old who was tragically killed in an accident in his truck. The SC Angus Association wants to remember Daniel in a special way by establishing a scholarship in his memory. The SCAA is still accepting applincations for that scholarship. Applications should be sent to Mike Johnson, treas. SCAA, 4368 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, SC 29355. The applicant must be a SC Junior Angus member, living in SC and involved in the Angus activities. He/She must be a junior in high school or older but not any older than 22 (college age).
If you have news for the newsletter, contact Windy Bartee. Our monthly news is published in “The Angus Topics” and “The Cattle Connection” and on the web site www.scangus.org each month. Banner ads are $50 per month plus the set up fee. Our annual membership dues are $20 and may be sent to SCAA, c/o Windy Bartee, 1717 St. Paul Church Road, Clover, SC 29710.
