July was hot enough in South Carolina to cause dreams of the cool weather at Christmas. Dreaming of Christmas in July seems odd but some of our SCJAA members went to Iowa for the National Junior Angus Show with the theme, “Christmas in July.” Ann Blumer, the past president of the SCJAA, greeted them there in her new role as a director of the NJAA. Garrett Metz, Teddi Steadman and Breann Steadman, our SC delegation of juniors, joined in the Christmas fun.

Judy Bourne reported on their activities, “Teddi was the voting delegate (Garrett didn't make it in time). Ann (Blumer) was there as board member. Garrett , Teddi and Breann were the only (SC) juniors. Teddi had two second placings and Breann had two eight placings. Garrett had one third placing.”

The results from the Iowa NJAA director election on the official Angus web site, www.angus.org, reports: “Ann Blumer, Chesnee, S.C., will serve as membership director. She is the daughter of Adam and Nancy Blumer and attends Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.”

South Carolina was well represented by these juniors all the way out in Iowa. That is a long way to go with cows and kids, but all those who went had a great adventure and learned about our vast USA.

August blasted hot air at the SC Beef Round-Up at Clemson on the first weekend. This is an all breed event but our Angus juniors were well represented. Of course their parents and families supported them as they worked with the juniors and their cows.

A brief summary of the event follows: The 21st Annual South Carolina Junior Beef Round Up was held at the T. Ed Garrison Livestock Arena, Clemson University, Clemson, SC on August 2-3, 2008.

The following breed shows took place at the 2008 Jr. Beef Round Up: Angus, Belted Galloway, Brangus, Charolais, Crossbred (Commercial), Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Red Angus, Santa Gertrudis, Shorthorn, Simmental, Texas Longhorn and SC Feeder Steers.

The 21st Annual South Carolina Junior Beef Round Up also hosted showmanship classes, the Jr. Cattlemen's Contest, Sales Talk competition and Scholarship Contests. Results are not available on this publication date.

Some families can squeeze in one last visit to the SC beach before school begins.

Then the school bell rings to herald that school starts in August. The start of school also means the beginning of the fairs and cattle shows. Just to mention a couple, The SC Upper State Fair in Greenville starts August 28th and ends September 7. The grand finale of fairs is the SC State Fair on October 8-19. The Angus show occupies just a portion of this time slot.

Plan to visit the Yon Family Farms on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Ridge Spring, SC. You can eat some great home cooked beef and see quality Angus as well as having a great time seeing old friends and making new ones. For directions and more information contact Kevin & Lydia Yon at (803)685-5048, kyon@pbtcomm.net.

By October and November the SC daily temperature will have declined some. We hope you have had sufficient rain to produce a fall hay crop. South Carolina is still under drought conditions. Hurricanes anyone?
