Summer time is show time in South Carolina. The bell to end school and exams barely rings before the Juniors are loading up their Angus to travel the show circuit.
SC Junior Angus Heifer Show - The first stop is the SC Junior Angus heifer show at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena on June 7 at 9 AM. All SCAA members are invited to join the fun. Dr. Dan Eversole from Virginia Tech serves as the judge. Showmanship comes first while the cows and children are clean and fresh.
Some good tips for juniors showing, included in the letter from advisor Lydia Yon are:
- Stay relaxed. This show is for you to practice and learn so that you will be prepared for the shows later in the season. It will help you gain confidence in yourself because you will know what is expected of you.
- Stay composed. This show is to help you present your cattle so they look their best. The cattle will be composed if you are. You and your calf will both look good if you remain calm.
- Be happy. This is a wonderful time to make new friends. If you are happy, then mom and dad are happy. Then the fun starts.
IMPORTANT INFO!!! Elections for SC Junior Angus
- The juniors will hold a meeting after the show to elect new officers and make plans for summer trips. If you plan to attend the Eastern Regionals and need a room, please let Lydia Yon know as soon as possible. If you are going to the National show you will need to make your own reservations.
Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show - The plans for the 2008 "Open the Gate in '08" edition of the Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show are in place for June 20 - 22, 2008. The theme is “Wild and Wonderful West Virginia” and is being held in Lewisburg, WV.
2008 National Junior Angus Show - The "Christmas in July" edition of the National Junior Angus Show, July 13 - 19, 2008 promises to be one of the best ever. The location is Des Moines, Iowa and the theme is “Christmas in July.” The web page http://www.angusjournal.com/easternregional/2008/ explains the opening of their show as follows:
Christmas! A time of family and friends gathering to enjoy good food, music and catching up with each other’s lives. Sounds a lot like a National Junior Angus Show! Iowa is looking forward to our Angus “Christmas” this coming July.
When you first think about Christmas, you think about giving gifts. People who feel blessed naturally want to share their good fortune with others. As Angus breeders, we are truly blessed. We have “friends and family” all across the country. We know that if we have trouble when we are traveling, friends are not far off. When we need advice or a pep talk, we have several friends to call.
Unfortunately, there are MANY people in the country who don’t have anyone or anywhere to turn. Those who suffer the most in these situations are usually the children. In keeping with our Christmas theme and the spirit of giving, our opening ceremonies act will be a group called “Sheltered Reality”. They are a drum core that performs around the United States promoting awareness for kids who end up in family shelters. To help them in their effort, we are asking each state to bring donations of:
- money
- stuffed animals
- personal care products
- school backpacks/school supplies
To be distributed to various family shelters across the country.
As each state is introduced at opening ceremonies, they will bring in their “goodies” and place them on the stage as they go by. Our goal is to have a mountain of goods by the time our last state has been introduced. What an impressive picture this will be! More importantly, what a great feeling knowing we brightened a child’s day!
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
SC Junior Beef Round-Up - August 2-3 will bring the last show before school begins again and the fairs. The SC Junior Beef Round-Up involves all cattle breeds and attracts youth from SC as well as the surrounding states. Education is the emphasis for the 4-H members and parents with multiple contests for all- not just the cattle. For an entry contact Dr. Larry Olson at Lolson@clemson.edu.
Keeping up with the former juniors and their progeny bring us news from Beth McPhail Dudley, one of the former presidents of the SC Juniors. Beth gave birth to Meredith Morland Dudley on April 23, 2008 via c-section at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Meredith weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz. and is 20” long. Her big brother Will loves to kiss his new sister. Walter McPhail from Seneca, SC is the proud grandfather.
If you have not yet paid your SCAA dues ($20) it is not too late.
As the show goes on, results will bring ribbons and premiums along with a lot of fun and knowledge. The custom is to say “ Break a leg” to those going on stage in a broadway show. However it just doesn’t sound right to say that to our juniors.
If you have news or dues for SCAA, please send it to Windy Bartee, 1717 St. Paul Church Road, Clover, SC 29170. To place an ad in the SCAA newsletter is $100. Banner ads may be placed on the www.scangus.org web site for $50/ month plus the set up fee
