How now Black Cow? Another year has flown by. We hope the New Year will bring you health, happiness and higher prices for your Black Angus.

Carolina Angus Futurity

Looking ahead at 2010, please mark your new calendars for March 19-20 to spend renewing friendships and making new ones with Angus folk at the Carolina Angus Futurity at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Cattle Complex. On Friday night, March 19th at 6:00 PM we will gather at Tucker’s Restaurant in Anderson, SC for our SCAA banquet and annual meeting. The cost will be $25 per person. The dinner will begin at 7:00. The new officers and directors will be introduced. (Be sure to return your ballot by January 31.)

Lewis Smith and the American Angus Hall of Fame will be looking for a few good Angus early in January to select the best females. If you have female Angus for the sale on Saturday, March 20th at noon, call Lewis at 864-261-6982 or 864-261-6982 to get in line for a stop on the tour. In addition, his wife Barbara Smith will be in touch to request items for the silent auction to benefit the SC juniors.

South Carolina and Ridge Spring, SC have another celebrity. Sally Yon was selected as the new Miss American Angus Queen at the NAILE in Louisville, KY in November. The following is a press release:

Yon Named Miss American Angus

Sally Yon of Ridge Spring, S.C., was crowned Miss American Angus, Monday, Nov. 16, during the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky.

Yon was among five young Angus women competing for the title, which also included: Jangle Rowlett, Hurricane Mills, Tenn.; Lindsey Grimes, Hillsboro, Ohio; Kelli Retallick, Glen Haven, Wis.; and Hannah McCabe, Elk City, Kan.

Yon was crowned just prior to the announcement of grand champion bull during the Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC).

The annual Miss American Angus contest is sponsored by the American Angus Auxiliary and provides one Angus junior an opportunity to promote the breed both inside and outside the showring. As an Angus ambassador, Miss American Angus assists with shows, educational events, field days and additional activities to educate others about the breed and the benefits of Angus beef.

Each year, five young women are chosen as candidates for the position through the Auxiliary’s scholarship program. Each completes a written test, delivers a prepared speech, completes an interview and answers impromptu questions from a panel of judges.

Yon was the winner of the fourth-place, $1,400 Auxiliary scholarship awarded earlier this year during the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). She lives with her parents, Kevin and Lydia, and brothers Drake and Corbin, at Yon Family Farms near Ridge Spring, where the family raises approximately 800 head of Angus cattle. Yon is involved in state and national junior Angus associations, where she shows cattle and participates in other activities.

She succeeds the 2009 Miss American Angus Katie Gazda of Athens, Ga.

The delegates representing SCAA at the AAA meeting in Louisville were: Kevin Yon, Evelyn Edmunds and Ted Bartee. Several of our juniors showed in the junior show on Sunday, November 15th. Cory Watt and Carly Watt from Iva, SC were parading their Whitestone Angus. John Petty from Clover, SC competed with his bred and owned Erica Eileen Lass. Destiny MCCauley formerly of Sumter, SC was spotted there in the ring. She now lives in Bowling Green, Florida. Dru Uden from Franklin, Nebraska, who was once a NJAA director , like our SC Ann Blumer, served as their judge.

The big surprise was seeing Tom Burke. Tom is a shadow of his former self and looks fabulous and healthier. He is selling the History of the NJAA as a fund raiser for the Georgia Junior Angus to help fund the National Junior Angus Show last July. Copies are still available. Jeremy Haag and Kurt Schaff of the American Angus Hall of Fame were also present.

SCAA Directories

Our new directories are available. Santa may have already delivered you one. If you need one contact Windy Bartee, secretary SCAA.

May this coming year bring more good news, health and happiness to our South Carolina Angus members and their cattle. We wish for peace and love to permeate the pastures and cities all over the world this year. Happy New Year!
