January 9, 2009

Whether we like it or not change is in the works for this new year- economic, political and personal. Change is difficult but a constant in our lives. Just learning to write 2009 for the date is a challenge. We hope the new year will bring changes for peace and a better world.

Carolina Futurity March 20-21, 2009

A big change for the SCAA in 2009 is the location of the Carolina Angus Futurity annual meeting and banquet on Friday, March 20th. The SCAA annual meeting and banquet has been moved to Tuckers Restaurant, 3501 Clemson Blvd., Anderson, SC, Tel: 864-844-2452. (Directions: Take Exit 19 A from I-85 onto Clemson Blvd. ( Hwy 76). Tuckers will be a few miles down on your right.) Just off I-85 at exit 19 the Comfort Suites, 118 Interstate Blvd., Anderson, SC 29621 has a block of rooms reserved for the South Carolina Angus Association at a rate of $86.39 plus tax. Call (864-622-1200) before Feb. 20th and ask for the SCAA rate. Ramada Inn, 1310 Tiger Blvd, Clemson, SC (864-654-7501) also has rooms at a special rate of $60.00 plus tax. Both have breakfast and a pool.

At the banquet the new SCAA officers and directors elected as a result of the enclosed ballots will be introduced. Ads for a new SCAA directory will be auctioned. Those chosen for the dedication of the Futurity as well as those added to the SC Angus Hall of Fame will be named and honored.

On Saturday, March 21at 12:00 the Carolina Angus Futurity Sale of select Angus females will be presented for auction at the Clemson T. Ed Garrison Arena’s Cattle Complex. Mike Jones will be the auctioneer. The American Angus Hall of Fame will manage the sale. Catalogues will be available by mail and online at www.scangus.org. Call Jeremy Haag or anyone at the Hall (816) 532-0811 or Lewis Smith, sales chairman (816) 617-7771 with questions.

In Memorium
Dale L. Handlin

One of the sad changes we experience with the passing of the years is the loss of a loved family member or friend. On December 22, 2008 we lost a member of our South Carolina Angus Association family, Dale L. Handlin (79). Dale made an important contribution to the Angus and Clemson community during his years in South Carolina. Dale served as a director of the SCAA for several years. He was a leader in organizing several Angus sales. In 1995 the Carolina Angus Futurity was dedicated to him and Willa. Professor Handlin was a positive influence on many young students as he taught animal science at Clemson . The members and officers of the South Carolina Angus Association join in sympathy with Willa and his family. In memory of Dale Handlin contributions may be made to the Heifer International, PO Box 8058, Little Rock, Arkansas 72203-8058 or the Zion United Methodist Church, 5708 Wild Hog Road (Rt. 187), Anderson, SC 29625.

Members from the selection team should be travelling through South Carolina around January 19-20th to determine which Angus qualify for the sale. Animals must have their proper registration papers to enter the sale. Breeders must be a member of the SCAA to enter animals.

SCAA officers and directors will meet immediately after the Clemson Bull sale at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Cattle Complex on February 7, 2009 to finalize the Futurity plans.

Another event that can bring change is the election of new leaders. The ballots for SCAA officers and new directors have been mailed. The results will be announced in March at the SCAA meeting.

As we begin the new year may it bring good changes. If it brings changes that we interpret as bad, may they be used to ultimately produce a better world for us all—including the Angus.
