South Carolina Angus Association News

February 2, 2011
Windy Bartee

The Angus are coming! The Angus are coming! Echoes that remind us of Paul Revere's alert about the British. Angus are a British breed and they are coming up for sale in South Carolina in February and March. The month of February is dominated by bull sales each Saturday. Look for ads for the Clemson Bull Sale on Feb. 5; Black Crest Angus and Tokeena Angus on Feb. 12; Yon Family Farms on Feb. 19; Sarratt Angus Ranch on March 12; Carolina Angus Futurity on March 19. Results will be reported as they are available.

Historically the Carolina Angus Futurity is the big annual event for the South Carolina Angus Association. This event includes the sale of selected Angus females from the top breeders who are members of the SCAA. The sale begins at noon on the third Saturday in March at Clemson's Cattle Complex next to the T. ED Garrison Arena.

The Angus festivities will begin on the Friday night preceding the sale. South Carolina Angus members gather for the SCAA annual meeting and banquet. Here they will visit with old friends and meet new ones, new to the Angus business. Some come with a youth looking for a show heifer. Many of our present breeders began as a South Carolina Junior Angus. Celebrities who may be spotted there are Sally Yon, Miss American Angus 2010; Cory Watt, the South Carolina Junior Angus president; Jeremy Haag , Angus Hall of Fame; David Gazda, American Angus Association representative and Kevin Yon, newly elected member to the American Angus Association Board of Directors.

40th Carolina Angus Futurity

This year the 40th Carolina Angus Futurity takes place on Saturday, March 19, 2011 again at Clemson's Cattle Complex. Frankie Mullikin, as SCAA vice-president, serves as the sales chairman (864-506-1282). Only SCAA members are eligible to enter their Angus in the sale and only the best of the breed is allowed.

Many of you know Cory Watt as the president of the South Carolina Junior Angus Association and a junior showing Angus. While Cory was a high school, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had it removed. He was able to finish high school and continue to show his Angus. The cancer was gone. Then in 2010 as he was a freshman at Clemson, the tumor was detected again in his brain. Many family, friends and Angus breeders were notified about Cory. Cory bravely continued with his showing and studies while the doctors decided how to attack his cancer. Cory was in Louisville in November to show his heifer at the NAILE. In January Cory sent the following message:

Windy,

I haven't talked to you since Louisville and just wanted to let you know that I had Radiation Surgery on January 5th in Emory and everything went good. The Dr was speechless when the planning MRI he did on the 4th showed that everything was clean and there was no sign of any tumor there. (Guess he doesn't know about the great Physician.) I am still taking a Chemo pill called Temodar for 5 days every 28 days for a year just for precaution. I am back at Clemson and everything is getting back to normal for everyone. I would like to thank everyone in the SCAA, SCJAA, and all Angus breeders for all their calls, cards and most of all their prayers.

Thanks Again,
Cory

Thankfully we can be involved with youth like Cory and with other Angus breeders in a country whose freedom was made possible by our forefathers like Paul Revere.
