South Carolina Angus Newsletter

June 7, 2011
Windy Bartee

Summer is off to a blustering start with "Wind in the Willows", trees on the fences, hay in the barns and Angus in the shows. Storms are breaking trees and houses wherever they blow with loss of life in many places. We hope your family, Angus and hay survived the terrible tempest and tumult that has affected so many in the USA and the world.

Even before summer began, South Carolina folk participated in the Atlantic Nationals in Timonium, Maryland on May 27-28. Winners returned with prizes in hand. Cory and Carly Watt from Iva showed in both the junior and open shows. Cory Watt showed Champion Hill Emblynette 7571 and won reserve early spring heifer calf champion. When Cory competed in senior showmanship he also won reserve champion. Colleen Jones from Kinston, NC was the champion show-woman. Breann Steadman competed in the open show and won reserve late summer calf champion with Gambles Beauty 7010 born on July 8, 2010.

The first summer show stopper was in Perry Georgia for the Southern National Angus Show, June 3. South Carolina was there with trailers full. In the Junior Show, Teddi Steadman won cow/calf Grand Champion with Cherry Knoll Ellie 9009 and her March bull calf, Cedar Creek Gas Money 846 1112. She also won reserve grand champion bred and owned heifer with Cedar Creek Forever Lady 1045, a December 15, 2010 heifer calf.

Teddi's little sister was right in there too. Breann Steadman had heifer calf champion with Gambles SS Shadoe 9010, DOB. 9/2/10. Breann also won reserve intermediate champion with Gambles Beauty 7010, DOB 7/8/10. Breann had junior calf champion and Grand Champion with Gambles Shadoe 3080, DOB 3/15/10.

In the Southern National open show Teddi Steadman had reserve cow/calf Champion with Cherry Knoll Ellie 9009 with her March bull calf, Cedar Creek Gas Money 846 1112.
Breann Steadman had heifer calf champion with Gambles SS Shadoe 9010, 9/2/10. She also won reserve intermediate champion with Gambles Beauty 7010, DOB 7/8/10. Then again Breann won junior calf champion and Reserve Grand Champion with Gambles Shadoe 3080 DOB 3/15/10. Finally Cedar Creek Farms, Ted Bourne, and Gambles Angus Farm won Junior Champion Bull and Grand Champion Bull with Gambles Safe Bet 4500, DOB 4/3/10.

This year the Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show heads to Cajun Country of East Monroe, Louisiana on June 17-18. With all the news of flooding near the Mississippi, we hope they are located on the high ground.

The All-American Breeders' Futurity on June 16-19 in Louisville, KY conflicts with the junior event in Louisiana. Oh, well you must make difficult choices in life.

Juniors may travel all the way to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for the National Junior Angus Show on July 10-16. Besides the Angus show many events and contests are open to the juniors. Often SC is represented with several teams and contestants. The money ( $4,281.00) raised by Barbara Smith and her team of helpers with the silent auction at the Carolina Futurity will help defray expenses for these trips.

August brings out the Beef Round-Up at Clemson and the National Junior Angus Association LEAD Conference. The St. Louis arches on the Mississippi River will landmark the location where the leadership skills of the youth will be honed on August 4-7. Not only do they learn about the skills needed for leading but they get to visit an important part of America and the history that opened up the West. Westward Ho the Angus youth leading the wagons of life skills. By the way school begins again in South Carolina in the hot month of August including the fairs. And more shows.

Meanwhile back on the ranch in South Carolina a new Directory is being honed for publication. A full page ad has been reduced to the low price of $125. A half –page ad is now only $75. Please get your ads sent in as fast as you can. Send to SCAA, c/o Windy Bartee, sec. 1717 St. Paul Church Road, Clover, SC 29710. EMAIL ; tumblet8@bellsouth.net TEL: 803-222-7533.

The summer has turned hot down here in South Carolina. We value any rain that falls but dread the floods and winds that sometimes come with them. That is the way life is. There are floods and winds and woes along with the sun and crops and blessings. May your life be blasted with blessings instead of woes.

A special thanks to those who helped with this news: Judy Bourne and the American Angus Association. If you have news or dues please send to Windy Bartee at the above address. SCAA dues are only $20 for June to June. www.scangus.org.
