In this season of Thanksgiving and Christmas, after we eat a good Thanksgiving meal our thoughts turn to shopping for gifts. Some people arise so early in the morning to get to stores after Thanksgiving Day that it reminds me of getting up early to get cows ready for an Angus Show.
Before we begin our list of ideas for gift-giving let us count our blessings just one more time.
What about giving thanks daily for the opportunity we have to live close to nature and our Angus?
Speaking of blessings, add Angus. Some great Angus were paraded around the ring at the South Carolina State Fair in Columbia, SC, during the shows.
In the Open Angus Show on Friday, October 21 Cory Watt won the grand champion female with his Champion Hill Emblynette 7571, the January 2010 daughter of SAV Mandan 5664. Ted Bourne from Cedar Creek in Donalds, SC won reserve Grand Champion with Breann Steadman's female, Gambles SS Shadoe 9010, the September daughter of BC Lookout 7024 .
When the bulls paraded, Ted Bourne won again. The Grand Champion Bull was Cedar Creek 826T 1101 owned by Ted's granddaughter Teddi Steadman. Teddi's bull is the January 2011 son of OCC Terrian 826T. Destiny McCauley, from Bowling Green, FL, formerly of South Carolina won the Reserve Grand Champion with McCauley Avatar X4. He is the December 2010 son of Gambles Hot Rod.
The Watts had it for the Junior Angus Show on Saturday, October 22. Carly Watt from Iva, SC, won Grand Champion Female with Champion Hill Georgina 7652, the March 2010 daughter of SAV Bismarck 5682.Then her brother Cory Watt stood with Champion Hill Emblynette7571 as Reserve Grand Champion Female. She is the January 2010 daughter of SAV Mandan 5664.
On a beautiful fall day with the sun shining on the glory of the colored leaves, the Yon Family Farm in Ridge Spring, SC, hosted an Angus sale. The day and the prices were almost as glorious as the leaves. A summary of the results will tell the tale best. Two hundred twenty-three head brought a sale gross of $684,450. Two hundred fifteen lots averaged $3,183. A more detailed account can be found elsewhere in the publication and in the Sale Report.
Now for a suggested Christmas gift to a favorite youth in your life. How about an Angus calf to get them started? This gift will come wrapped with blessings of cow shows, travelling the roads of America, early mornings, hard work, great friends and an education. Sometimes prize money and scholarships come as a bonus in this gift. Sometimes even a job. Do you think Santa can get all that in his sled this Christmas?
One gift Cory Watt, president of the South Carolina Junior Angus Association, needs is our prayers. Earlier Cory was blessed with a miracle recovery from a brain tumor. Now Cory seeks another. His doctors have detected another tumor. His father Jody has asked for our prayers for Cody as the doctors decide what treatment is best. Please pray for Cory and his doctors as they battle this disease again.
Another former junior is fighting cancer. Rodney Osborne from Woodruff showed Angus as a junior in the 1970s and 1980s when Mrs. Evelyn Edmunds' daughter, Leigh was showing. Rodney has worked with cattle most of his life including at the Saluda Sale Barn.

Bailey and Eloise
One of the blessings we celebrate as Angus breeders is the joy of the birth of a new calf. It is even a greater blessing when a child is born. The Bartee clan is celebrating the birth of a new child. Bailey “Radar” Bartee and his wife, Brandi gave birth to Eloise Knight Bartee on November 9, 2011. Her birth weight was 8 lbs. and 2 oz. with assistance, i.e. C-section. Bailey is a former SC Junior Angus member and now lives in Charlotte, NC.
As we count our many blessings we also remember those who have blessed us but are no longer with us. The McPhail family of South Carolina has lost their sister, Mary McPhail Cannon. Her father, W.H. McPhail brought the first Angus herd into South Carolina and began the South Carolina Angus Association. His farm Tokeena Angus has been named a Historic Angus Herd by the American Angus Association.
