South Carolina Angus Newsletter

October 2, 2011
Windy Bartee

In this world one thing is constant besides change…our youth with their Angus cattle are winners. As schools in South Carolina geared up for class, our youth continued to travel with their Angus.

Let us review some of the high-light achievements of our South Carolinian Angus Juniors.

In Lewisville, West Virginia, Cory Watt won the Grand Champion Female and Junior Champion with Champion Hill Emblynette 7571 on August 16 at the 2011 State Fair of West Virginia Roll of Victory Angus Show. Standing with the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the same event was Breann Steadman with Gambles SS Shadoe 9010. She had also won Senior Calf Champion. Breann added Reserve Junior Champion Heifer with Gambles Shadoe 3080. Breann's heifer Gambles Beauty 7010 won Intermediate Champion Heifer.

In Nashville, Tennessee on September 11 at the 2011 Tennessee State Fair Roll of Victory Angus Show, Gambles SS Shadoe 9010 owned by Breann Steadman won the Grand Champion Female as well as Senior Calf Champion.

In Lawrenceville, Georgia at the Southeast Empire Livestock Angus Show, Carly Watt won Grand Champion Female with Champion Hill Georgina 7652 on September 16, 2011.

At the York County Fall Livestock Show the Angus and Beef Show took place at the Triple Creek Farm on Saturday, September 10. In beginners showmanship Baylie Black of Jonesville, SC won first. Ricky Glass of Laurens won first in the Intermediate Showmanship Class. The Senior Showmanship winner was Lena Freeman of Union. She also won a $250 scholarship.

The Angus classes had the following first place winners: Tripp Bolin, Dakota Bolin, Joey McGill and Lauren McGill times three.

Tripp Bolin won the Grand Champion Female purple ribbon. Joey Mc Gill took home the Reserve Grand Champion Rosette.

Another constant is that Angus cattle continue to be in demand. October began the fall Angus sales.

Sarratt Farms in Gaffney, South Carolina opened the bidding for Angus on the first cool fall Saturday in October. Buyers turned out on a beautiful fall day to enjoy the good cooking and the good Angus. Bill Sarratt and his family were great hosts. Cody Bright had the cattle ready to display. Mike Jones led the auction with Jeremy Haag from the Angus Hall of Fame, Smithville, MO as sale manager. The results follow:

Pure Bred Angus, 21 lots, brought $47,900 for an average of $2,281.
Angus Bulls, 22 lots, brought $47,950 for an average of $2,280.

Commercial Bred Females, 30 lots, brought $59,900 for an average of $1,997.

Open Commercial Females, 11 lots, brought $10,100 for an average of $918.

The sale grossed $165,850.

Congratulations to Bill Sarratt and family and Cody Bright on the successful sale.

Next watch for Black Crest Farm Annual Production Sale on Saturday, October 29, 2011, 1320 Old Manning Road, Sumter, SC. Call Thomas Burton (803) 968-9358 or Billy McLeod (803) 491-6798 for more information.

Then in November the Yon Family Farms Female and Bull Sale takes place on November 5 at Ridge Spring, SC. Contact Kevin or Lydia Yon (803)685-5048 or kyon@pbtcomm.net for more information.

The high quality of our South Carolina Angus has them in demand. This demand is expected to increase due to the problems in Texas this year with the drought and fires. We are thankful for the constant presence of Angus in our lives.
