South Carolina Angus Newsletter

September 9, 2011
Windy Bartee

Summer has brought literally "earth shattering events" with earthquake, heat record and hurricanes. All these events did not slow down our South Carolina juniors. They have been on the move all over the United States and shook the earth with their Angus. They tried to be everywhere.

Carly Watt, Cory Watt, both from Iva and Sally Yon from Ridge Spring were the junior members who represented South Carolina at the 2011 LEAD (Leaders Engaged in Angus Development) Conference, Aug. 4-7 in St. Louis, Mo. A total of 144 youth and advisors from 33 states and Canada attended the conference, "Meat Me in St. Louie," enhancing leadership and interpersonal skills while learning more about the beef industry. Sally Yon has been to several LEAD conferences and her skills have been well honed. She was elected to serve on the board of the National Junior Angus Association in July at the National Junior Angus Show. Last year she served as Miss American Angus. Formerly she served as the SC Junior Angus president. Cory Watt has followed her leadership and presently serves as the SCJAA president. Carly Watt, his sister, has begun to attend. Watch out!

Oh, have I mentioned that Drake Yon won the Angus Foundation Dick Spader Memorial Scholarship ($5000) at the Nationals in July? (From the AAA news: The Angus Foundation awarded more than $210,000 in college scholarships to 80 Angus youth at the 2011 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) July 15 and 16 in Harrisburg, Pa. The Angus Foundation's mission is to fund education, youth and research activities to advance the Angus breed. Applicants, to the Angus Foundation's undergraduate and graduate student scholarship program, are evaluated on involvement in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), involvement in the applicant's state junior Angus association and other criteria.)

On August 7 Beef Round-Up brings together youth competing with their cattle from all around SC and the neighboring states. Georgia put a dent in the South Carolina Angus winnings. In the Angus show Logan Steed from Carollton, Georgia won grand champion owned female with P&M Lady Tina X131.

But Shelby McGill from the Steve McGill family of Iva was there to win the reserve grand champion female with South Starr Carolina KT S448. The reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female was won by Logan Steed from Carrollton, GA with P&M Burgess X61B.

The juniors headed north for cooler weather in the West Virginia Mountains and made a sweep at the West Virginia State Fair.

Cory Watt won the Grand Champion Angus female with Champion Hill Emblynette7571. This heifer also won junior champion. Gambles SS Shadoe 9010 won reserve grand champion female for Breann Steadman of Greenwood, SC. Breann Steadman also owns Gambles Shadoe 3080, who won reserve junior champion heifer. The intermediate champion heifer was Gambles Beauty 7010 owned by Breann Steadman. The temperature in Lewisburg, WV might have been cool(er) but the SC Angus were HOT!

Now the juniors should all be safely back in school. Since their cattle got A's, hopefully the students will too. However when school starts the F's start…..fall, football fans, farm sales and fairs. The York County Livestock Show is September 10th at Triple Creek in Rock Hill, SC. On October 1 the Sarratt Angus Farm Sale starts in Gaffney South Carolina. October 20-21 is the South Carolina State Fair Beef Cattle Shows in Columbia, SC. The Angus usually are shown on Friday and Saturday for the open and junior shows. November 5 is the Yon Family Farm Sale in Ridge Spring, SC. We hope the winnings and prices will shake the earth down South Carolina way instead of an earthquake.

Delegates from South Carolina will travel again to Louisville, KY for the American Angus annual meeting and election taking place on November 14. Cattle will be shown during the NAILE (North American International Livestock Exposition). Angus are shown November 13-15.

These are the South Carolina delegates: Kevin Yon of Ridge Spring, Walter Shealy of Newberry,Ted Bartee of Clover. The alternates are Evelyn Edmunds of Clover, Ted Bourne of Donald's and F. Lewis Smith of Pendleton. Kevin Yon also serves as a director of the American Angus Association. Stay tuned for further adventures of the fall and other earth shattering events and breaking news from South Carolina.

Evelyn Edmunds and Ray Petty, SCAA members, are helping with the York County Fall Angus Show in Rock Hill, SC on September 10, 2011.
